Greetings ASL Fans;
Well the Red Barricades CG date that wouldn’t end finally ended yesterday at the St. Crispin’s Game Day in Anaheim.
Dan Plachta and Matt Romey were in command of the Germans against me, Jim Cotugno and Scott Thompson as the Russians.
The fight resumed with the Russian half of turn 5, October 27th CG date. The Russians had been taken a brutal beating up to this point thanks to a long series of unfortunate circumstances (particularly rain, which prevented us from smoking the German kill stacks.) But things were finally looking up. The rain had let up and Russian mortars had gone to work getting as much Smoke in place as possible. But then the worst happened; the rain returned. All the Smoke went away, and the Russian infantry was once again getting plastered by German heavy weapons and Guns. Much to our disappointment the CG date didn’t end at the bottom of turn 5, and we rolled into turn 6. More bloodletting ensued while the Russian tried to cling to whatever cover they could find and prevent a German breakout on the east flank.
Finally with the end of turn 6 it was over. But the results were heinous for the Russians: 50 squads, plus 6 leaders, 3 HMG’s, 4 Guns, and 6 crews were in the dirt cup. The perimeter remained almost exactly where it started from the west flank through the factories. But on east flank, between the factories and the river, the Russians had been pushed back about 20 hexes, almost to the Kindergarten. The Germans took some losses; 15 squads, 3 leaders, 3 AFV’s and some MG’s, but not nearly enough. Thankfully, (from the Russian perspective) a lot of 548 sturm squads ELR’d down to 447 thanks to the 1 ELR for both sides.
The Germans really needed to have a big gain on this CG date, and they got it. The problem the Germans are facing is the upcoming two weeks of CG dates give them no -1 historical mods, (and about half are +1.) The Russians are almost all 0 or -1 during the period. A negative historical mod, for those unfamiliar with the RB CG, allows the side to purchase extra infantry, while the positive ones reduce the amount that can be purchased. It also affects depletion DR’s. The Germans were outnumbered about 2:1 coming into the fight and really need to cripple the Russian manpower advantage before it became overwhelming. And they did. There’s still a lot of fight left in these two forces, and about another 30 CG dates to go.
The Red Barricades Project will be meeting next month, but not to play RB. I will be at ASLOK that day. So Jim Cotugno and Dan Plachta are planning to meet and play a scenario. They’re also going to fulfill our annual obligation to serve lunch to the St. Crispins gamers. You are still welcome to join them.
We will resume the carnage in November with the start of the October 28th CG date.
