We had another great day in Brea yesterday for our December edition of the Orange County Game Day. We had six members in attendance, with a total of four scenarios played:

Scott Thompson’s Russians defeated Candice Juliano’s Germans in the classic scenario “Acts of Defiance”.

Alex Robert’s Greeks beat Stephan Tourville’s Italians in “Paper Army”. They turned it around and played it again, with Stephan also winning as the Greeks. Evidently the key to winning this scenario is pick the Greeks!

Bill Yuen and I played “Trigger Happy Joes” from the most recent Schewerepunkt. I’ve wanted to play this scenario since I bought the pack at ASLOK for two reasons; 1) it was designed by my pal; ace scenario designer Pete Shelling. And 2) it is based on the same engagement as my MP scenario “Marnach Strongpoint”. Bill took the Americans and I had the Germans. The scenario still came down to the last turn, when my Germans finally blasted the remaining Americans out of the victory building. Kudos to Bill for a game well played (only his second using the full ASL system). Despite some absolutely terrible luck, he hung on and made it a very close end-game. We both agreed that this is a fun scenario and well worth another playing.

We had a nice group lunch at Brea’s Best Burgers.

Our next Game Day will be at Gameology in Claremont on January 3rd.

Hats off to Candice for a game well played, and for her determination and skill.

Candice was on the receiving end of my dice, which were VERY happy to be playing ASL again after my hiatus…all kinds of crappy things happened to Candice. 120mm OBA critical hit in a stone building vaporizing units…both goliaths went off *without* a bridge falling…her 75LL SPG was stunned after it's first shot, then flipped to UK, but then recovered, only to be later taken out with a CH in the rear from a SU-122…me rolling snakes in CC and creating an 8-0 leader…my average dice rolls being a 5 for most of the game…an on and on.

Through it all, Candice kept up her attack, kept pushing my Russians further and further back into smaller and smaller pockets. We ended up having to call the game as we were getting ready to start the last turn, but it looked like the Russians would be able to hold out in one corner after a 'shreck hs broke from eating backblast, leaving me a corner to hide in behind my OBA screen. It's a testament to Candice's skill and determination that she was able to keep this game very close despite all of the crappy luck that was thrown her way.

Great game Candice, and I look forward to our next one!

    Semper Fi!

Alex and I decided that Paper Army might be a closer game with the balance, which moved the exit row about 5 or 6 hexes closer. As it is, the Italians have to CX at every opportunity to get to the other side, and if the Greek reinforcements come in early, then they are really screwed.

Has anyone else played this one? Any thoughts? :?

    Scott,

Thanks for the kind words! You played very well for not having had much practice lately. I didn't really know how to go about assaulting your OBA-defended position which ended up losing me the game. The dice were your friend, which helped, but it was your skill and good use of that killer OBA that in my mind won the game.

    Stephan,

I played Paper Army with Casta a while back at Scott's house. My Greeks won, because the reinforcements came on and stopped them cold. Personally I didn't care much for the scenario, though if memory serves it would be useful to teach the utility of Grain as a hindrance.

I pushed pretty hard with the Greeks, but Casta did excellent rear-guard action by leaving behind a few half-squads of Italians here and there which delayed me. The reinforcing Greeks though easily stop attacking Italians with their low morale and thus low chance of rallying.

In my mind it isn't one of the best SK scenarios, but is one of the better ones in SK2. SK3 has much better scenarios, though Monty's Gamble from that one sucks big-time.
