    Greetings ASL Fans;

    As I anticipated, our San Diego Game Day continues to pull in some impressive numbers. We had 7 members in attendance this month:

    Victor Behar’s Americans and Dave Perham’s Germans battled to a declared draw in the MP scenario “Holy Ground”.

    Hank W.’s Americans defeated Fred Timm’s Germans in “Duel at Rueger”.

    And my Germans defeated Henry DeVries’ Partisans in the new Dispatches scenario “Roadside Assistance”. I must say this scenario (out of Dispatches #31) is one of my new favorites; Henry and I had a blast playing it from beginning to end. Fun, exciting and balanced, I will definitely play this one again.

    Our host Jimmy Hansen chose the role of observer for the day. We adjourned in the early afternoon for lunch at Panda Express. Great fun all around.

    Regards,

    Jim

    Sure thing.

    “Roadside Assistance” opens on boards 2 and 3, with a SPW 251sMG stranded on a road in Greece. It is supported by an 8-0 and an additional 4-6-8 detailed to defend it against a couple of groups of Partisans located nearby. Help is on the way in the form of a fast-moving column of 2.5 SS squads and six SPW’s: three 251/1 and one each 251/10, 251/2 and 251/16 (yeah the one with the duel FT’s.) The relief column must punch through the on-board Partisans, dash through the board, assist the 251/sMG and then punch through another arriving group of Partisans in order to exit.

    The scenario manages to be both elegantly simple (very fundamental combined-arms) and surprisingly complicated (fluid battle with both sides picking where and how they want to engage). We’re talking about a scenario where the defender can knock out the best enemy AFV with an ATR and the attacker has the potential to do an OVR with a FT MA. It also demonstrates how powerful and flexible halftracks can be.

    Most important, it scores very high on the fun and excitement scales (4.5 turns doesn’t give either side a lot of time to accomplish their VC’s). This scenario is one of four in Dispatches from the Bunker #31. For those who don’t subscribe to Dispatches, I can’t recommend this publication highly enough. I have never been disappointed with an issue or a scenario I’ve played from one. They come up with a lot of clever designs that hold up well in both the replayability and balance categories. Issue #31 also has “The 138 of the 138th”, a scenario played on the Red Barricades map based on the book “Island of Fire”. I can’t wait to get a crack at that one as well.
