We had five members for our December edition of The Red Barricades Project. Mike Cirrincione, Dan Plachta and Chris Castallana made up the German commanders against me and Jim Cotugno as the Russians.
We all arrived right around 10:00 am, and because the Germans had pulled an Attack Chit for the 10/21 CG date, I had already done the purchases and pre-recorded a tentative Russian set-up. Tentative because I like to get Jim’s excellent input; he always has some clever ideas, and this CG date was no exception.
While we were completing our set-up the German players were busy at a nearby table hatching a plan of their own. By lunch both sides were set up and ready to roll. After the bloodletting of the previous CG date (40 total squads dead) infantry purchases were definitely a priority, and both sides had a lot of cloaked units in reserve positions. The Germans began employing new tactics; large kill-stacks over-watching small assault groups that probed forward and dared the Russians to show themselves. At one point Casta’s HMG went on a 12-shot rate tear that cost the Russians three full squads. But we Russians had a couple of tricks up our sleeves as well; the Germans lost an 9-1, three elite squads, two MMG’s, and a LMG to a surprise counter-attack by some HIP Russians.
We wrapped up after two full turns played, with the Russians down by 7.5 squads and the Germans down by 5. We will resume the bloodletting in January. Stay tuned folks!
