We had 7 members, plus a cameo by Chris Castellana, who joined us for lunch.
Hank W.'s Germans defeated Dan Plachta's Brits in “The Closer”.
Guy Jimenez' Germans defeated Fen Yan's Russians and a razor close playing of “Eye of the Tiger”.
And the dice gave Dave Nicholas the Russians against Stance Nixon and myself as the attacking Germans in the Dispatches scenario “Sochaczew” (don't ask me to pronounce that…)
We were looking for something early war, and this 8 turn gem looked like just what we wanted. It shows dead even on ROAR, and definitely felt it based on our playing. The Poles get a well-led company of mixed quality, backed with 2 HMG's, 2 MMG's and a 37L AT Gun. They also get fortified locations, a ton of HIP and 2 ATR's. They have a 10-2 that makes all MMC's stacked with him Fanatic. The Germans get a powerful attacking force with a company of SS rifle squads, and a couple of 5-4-8 assault engineers. They're backed by a 7 AFV's: a mix of PzIB, PzIIA, PzIIID, PzIVA and a PSW222. They also get a 150 OBA with a pre-reg. The Germans need 100 VP's scored by CVP, capturing board 10 buildings and exit. There are about 85 VP's in buildings, which means the Germans need some CVP's or exit some EVP's to win.
Dave had a couple of squads fairly far forward, backed by the 10-2, a 4-5-8 and an HMG in a fortified location also fairly far forward. The battle centered on the 10-2's position. The first couple of turns went well for us. We were able to crush the forward positions and cut off the 10-2's position on turn 2. We then dialed in the 'buck fifty' to pound them into submission. That was the plan. But, despite pounding from the 150, direct fire from the PzIV, and shots from a 9-2 led kill stack, the position wouldn't fall. Stance made some progress on the German left, but the 10-2 tied up our right flank for 3 turns. Finally the 10-2 and MMC broke. We cancelled the OBA mission and rushed guys up adjacent to force rout. Then stupidly I shot them one last time and, sure enough, the MMC went HOB and rallied. Damn, we were back where we started! It proved to be a fatal error. We didn't clear that position for another turn, and that left only two turns to capture the remaining buildings and exit. We got close, but on turn 7 we counted up our 'best case' VP's and knew we were coming up at least 5 short, and called it a Polish victory.
This is a hell of a scenario. It was big, fun and, well… exhausting. We all had a blast and said we'd try it again in a heartbeat.
We had our usual lunch at 600 Degrees Pizza. The survivors adjourned to Hambone's for our traditional late dinner.
