Greetings all;
I’m sorry to announce that the suspension of the San Diego Game Day has been extended through February. This of course does not affect our other Game Day locations in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

There are several reasons why the San Diego Game Day was cancelled, but the primary reason is attendance. After a promising start, attendance has cratered to an average of less than 3 since May, and that includes the fact that Rob and I have attended almost every one. Neither of us is available this month.
Unlike the Game Days at Gameology and Brea, the San Diego location has failed to attract and hold new players and players who are new to the Club. It is my experience that this is critical to achieving and maintaining critical mass attendance-wise. Most of the attendance growth in those two locations has come from new players. For a Game Day to be successful it needs to maintain an average of at least 4, and ideally 6. As Geoff has pointed out, aside form the synergy of numbers, one advantage of drawing at least 6 each month means you can play a variety of opponents from month to month.
I believe at least part of the problem is the necessity of meeting on Sundays. That doesn’t work well for me personally, and I know others for whom it doesn’t work at all.
I am working on finding us a better location in the hope we can try again. Barring that, we may have to simply recognize that the Game Day format just doesn’t work in San Diego, and try something completely different. If anyone has a suggestion, I would really like to hear it.
I too find Sundays bad for me. I have suggested it in the past and will suggest it again. Pair a Dice is just off the 78 in Vista and when I asked last year about meeting there the owner had no problems with it. The biggest problem is that some of their events are every other week.

Once the football season ends, I can play ftf at my apartment. Sadly, I no longer have the ability to play campaigns or leave larger scenarios set up between sessions, but if anyone reading this wants to get together sometime, just let me know.@Jim Aikens wrote:

They were talking about it, but the last I heard is that they now play to stay open. I think Rob is looking to sell though.
Sundays were semi-doable for me but not without some grief from the commissar of the household. Saturday would be better. I highly recommend Game Empire as a somewhat central location for SD game days in a theoretical future, but on Sat. not Sun. That would help me out enormously.
Game Empire is a great gaming store. They have a large number of tables, with a bunch setup for miniatures gaming. You might even bleed off a couple players given the overlap of interest in the WWII theater.
Game Empire is located just off the 805 at Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Let me know if you'd like me to investigate their capacity for Sat. gaming.

As I recall, an attempt was made to use Game Empire, but there were issues which prevented it.
Does your wife know you refer to her as Commissar? Does she know what a Commissar is? Pretty harsh, man.Too bad if there were issues since Sat. they are open from 10am to 11pm. That is a good deal of game time. What were the issue with them? They didn't want to contaminate the miniatures crowd??
Regarding the latter, no and no. Given her level of disdain for the game, and the control she exerts on game time allowed…not many titles fit.
If I recall, someone checked with Game Empire and the manager said that ASL players were barred from meeting there. Nothing to do with us, some other ASL players unconnected with us had made themselves unwelcome, but that we were included in the ban.
I recall now with Pair ‘o Dice; I stopped in about a year and spoke to the manager about meeting there. They really didn’t have any place for us to play on Saturday. Like Mira Mesa, the collectable card crowd pretty much rules the roost on Saturdays.
That's unfortunate that some other players spoiled it for the rest. G.E. is a pretty cool place. Maybe they don't like the sound of dice clinking in glasses. Maybe we can put on costumes and say we are D&D players hehe. Of course the first rof tear with a heavy might blow that cover…c'est la vie!
Personally, I wonder how much it has to do with other factors. We've been told by the other Game Day retailers how difficult it is to get ASL product on the shelf. Or it could be they think the definition of “not hip” is having a bunch of middle-age guys sitting around the game store. Or maybe ASL just doesn't fit with their business model.
