We're not geeky enough, as difficult as it might be to wrap your mind around that.
January 18, 2010 at 3:43 am #5922Jim AikensKeymasterDave, I hate to admit it, but I think you’re right. ASL’ers might be geeks relative to the general population, but we barely register on the geek-o-meter compared to other gaming interests.
I remember years ago being at Avaloncon, when they had the giant ASL tournament all in one room. I was standing by the door when a couple of non-ASL’er gamers happened by and looked in. One sniffed the air and turned to his companion. “Smell that?†he asked. “No†said the other “what is it?†The first replied “The smell of testosterone.â€
Even back then we had a reputation of not being the same as the other game geeks.
January 21, 2010 at 12:46 am #5923rdfMemberHey guys. Just cruising by looking for info about WCM and the next SD meet up and saw this discussion.
I checked Game Empire's calendar, and it looks like there's mainly one game that's played on Saturday nights there which means they have table space in the mornings and afternoons ([link]http://gameempire.com/calendar.html[/link]).
On the other hand, Pair A Dice has almost all Saturdays open from March onwards ([link]http://www.pairadicegames.com/StoreInfo/Events/tabid/54/Default.aspx[/link]). I'm sure people book events closer to their respective date (see January) so ASLers could easily get table space if they were to book some space in advance.
February 2, 2010 at 1:08 am #5924AnonymousGuestHello Everyone,
I am sorry that I was absent at the last, October, meeting, it is simply that life precluded it.
GE is a good store, and Cliff (Owner) is a good guy. There is a large WW2 miniatures crowd which we might help grow our play base. One thing Cliff mentioned is the fact that ASL has traditionally been a difficult, and expensive, product to stock.
If you are all interested, I can speak with him next time I am there to see if we could grab a table or two

Unfortunately, we have a sad history with G.E. I’ve finally put the entire story together. Our LA group used to meet at G.E. in Pasadena until the manager unceremoniously kicked them out without warning. He stated that our members weren’t spending enough in the store to warrant wasting table space to host them. (That reason was neither fair nor accurate, but it was the reason given.) That prohibition was extended to San Diego as well. Even if G.E. were willing to reconsider its ban (which I doubt) it was an embarrassing, frustrating and unfortunate incident that I’m sure none of us would like to see repeated. In contrast the managers at Gameology and The Realm are quite satisfied with the amount of money we spend in their respective stores, and are quite happy to have us.
May 6, 2010 at 9:45 pm #5926rdfMemberHi guys, I'm new here, and to ASL…still on the SKs. If anyone here is a veteran and a member, perhaps one of the many VFW or American Legion posts in San Diego might be suitable for game days. I'm not sure what their requirements are for gatherings, just throwing that out there.
I wanted to go to the January meet, but was going out of town the next day. Sundays are fine for me – I have weekly boardgame nights at my place just about every Saturday.
May 6, 2010 at 11:00 pm #5927rdfMemberI think the problem in San Diego is less a lack of venue and more a lack of interest…sad to say.
