We had seven people show up at The Realm yesterday for some ASL fun. Of note, we had three new attendees…Bill, Alex and Candice…I appologize that I didn't get everyone's last names. They are all current SK players, but we're hoping they make the jump to full ASL before too long. We also had a nice group lunch at Breas Best Burgers. I ended up leaving around 4:30 due to a raging headache that just wouldn't go away, so I did not see the final outcome of a couple games.
Jim Aikens (Russian) and Karl Johnson (Hungarian) played RPT3 Varosmajor Grange. Based on KJ's posting last night about pulverized dice for sale, I'd say that his Hungarians were unsuccesful in their attack (I left before they had finished this).
Eric Visnowski (German) and Bill (Russian) played S21 Clash at Borisovka as Bill wantred to get a handle on the vehicle rules…what better way to learn them than to play an all armor battle! I'm not sure of the final outcome on this one, but I *think* that Bill got enough kills/exited vehicles for the win, but they will have to confirm. When I was getting ready to leave they were setting up a second game, but I didn't catch what scenario they had selected.
Candice (American) and Alex (German) played S4 Welcome Back. I'm not sure of the final outcome of their game as I left before it was over, but Candice was getting a lot of rate shots with her .50 HMG, and appeared to be stopping the German attack in the center…but it looked like the Germans were getting the upper hand in their flanking attack through the woods. As both Candice and Alex are newer players, I answered a lot of rules questions (I might have even gotten a couple correct) and gave unsolicited tactical tips.
This was our best showing yet…I hope to see you all again next month!

ScottJune 26, 2008 at 5:42 pm #5122King ScottMemberAll,
I’ll pick up where Scott left off…
Shortly after Scott departed, John Wootress arrived. John did some work on his rule book while Karl and I wrapped up our game. Then he and I took on a couple of instructional turns of “Butchers and Bakers†from Schwere’s Rally Pack. We wrapped it up at the 8:00 pm closing. So we ended up with 8 players for the day and five scenarios played; an excellent turn-out by any standard.
Please note that Scott volunteered to be “Lucky Pedro†because we had an odd number of attendees; he sat out so everyone else could play. I want to personally thank him for taking on that duty.
I have long felt that our traditional group lunch at Marie Calendar’s has been a key component in the on-going success of our LA Game Day. I am very pleased that we have instituted a new tradition for the O.C. Game Day; a group lunch at Brea’s Best Burgers.
I’m also very excited to point out that Candice, John, Alex and Bill; half of our O.C. turnout, have been participating in SoCalASL events for 3 months or less. One Day Events are a great way for new local players to learn the game system, meet fellow players and get involved in Club activities. I can’t think of a more effective membership recruitment tool.
I want to thank Scott for getting this event up and running. We’re off to a great start.
Regards,
Jim

came 1 AFV kill/exited short of victory.June 27, 2008 at 1:24 am #5124testuserMemberAlex won our game with a turn to spare. It was mostly due to my bad setup – I defended OG instead of the obvious large wooded area. I pretty much felt I was going to lose right after I began playing. Three 12's in a row for MCs didn't help much, but it wasn't the deciding factor. Alex played well and stuck to his plan, and I didn't move fast enough to redeploy from the small village to the woods.
We both learned a great deal and had a good time. I hope to get in some more ASL SK scenarios at the upcoming meet at Gameology.
The Realm was very hot, and could really use a fan to move some air around. Hopefully the next meeting won't be in the middle of a heat wave like this last one was. I had to wring out my clothes after getting home b/c of the sweat!
Thanks to Scott for his services as a living rulebook. He helped to keep our game going and was very kind to help.
June 27, 2008 at 2:15 am #5125King ScottMemberIt was brutal hot in there…too many people in there last weekend. Hopefully there won't be as many next month.
I called it “the ASL weight loss program”…”I lost the game *and* three pounds!”

ScottJune 30, 2008 at 11:53 pm #5126Jim AikensKeymasterCandice, I like your idea of a fan (maybe two) for the Realm. As Scott pointed out, part of the problem was the room was unusually crowded, added to our location along the windows. Once the AC kicked in it wasn't so bad though. A fan or two would help. I will try to remember to bring one next time.
