We had four Club members brave the smoke and embers yesterday to attend our OC Monthly Game Day, and two scenarios were played:
Stephan’s Allies defeated Bill’s Germans in S13 “Priority Targetâ€.
My Germans defeated KJ’s Americans in SP157 “Edge of Extinctionâ€.
We enjoyed our usual lunch at The Hat. I’ll let Bill and Stephan comment on their scenario. Look for my scenario AAR in the Forum AAR section.
Karl and I had a fun game. “Edge of Extinction†looked pretty interesting; The Americans get 5 M-24 “Chaffeesâ€, a couple of halftracks, a jeep and a gaggle of first-line infantry. Their mission is to take out (or immobilize) two late model Tigers protected by a couple of platoons of late-war German infantry (mixed quality) with ELR 2. They have only 4.5 turns to do it.
In our analysis, we felt that this scenario is pretty challenging for the American player, and in an initial playing the German probably has the advantage, since the defender’s choices for set-up are fairly obvious. For the Americans to win, they need to use every trick the Chaffees have to offer: smoke mortars, WP, Gyros, fast traverse, multiple hits, and lots of speed, to dash to a position where they can get a bounding fire rear shot or survive long enough to get a deliberate immobilization.
Even then they’ll need a little luck (something Karl is always notoriously lacking.)
I was hoping to use this scenario for a mini (or The Melee) at WCM, since it’s an interesting scenario that plays very quickly, but I want to see it played once or twice more before I’ll do that.
November 17, 2008 at 4:35 am #5509King ScottMemberBill and I had a great game. This is more or less the setup I had:
Bill chose a three-pronged attack and managed to roll up the Greeks on the left and the Brits in the middle in fairly short order. The guns were mostly silent, waiting until they could see the whites of the Germans' eyes… and managed to break just as the Gerrys moved into point-blank range! (I also managed to break every LMG I had.. I guess it's true–nothing is infantry-proof).
!grr
Luckily Bill had some uninspiring leaders, and the full squads I managed to break stayed broken for much of the game. He did what he could with the remaining half-squads, capturing the left and middle guns, but the Brits on the right held and the halfsies racing across the grain were one hex short of an assault on the last remaining Bofors.
It was a fantastic game and thanks to Bill for schooling me up on how to use the guns. Looking forward to our next battle!
