We had four members in attendance for The Red Barricades Project at the St. Crispin’s Hobby Day in Anaheim. Chris Castallana and Dan Plachta running the Germans, with Jim Cotugno and I commanding the Russians.
We resumed the action on turn 7 of the 10/20/42 (4th) CG date. The Germans spent most of the turn consolidating their gains, inflicting a few more losses on the Russians, and dodging a couple of localized Russian counter-attacks. The Russians were able to regain some lost territory on the east flank and center, though their position was significantly eroded on the west flank, with the loss of the Electrical Plant. The Russian team breathed a collective sigh of relief when the rolled to end the CG at the end of the 7th turn.
When the smoke cleared, the Russians had paid dearly for standing and fighting behind the wire on their west flank, with 27 squads and 3 leaders in the dirt cup. But the Germans had paid for their gains, with 13 squads and 4 leaders dead. Their casualties included eight 5-4-8 Sturm squads. A total of 40 squads and 7 leaders were in the dirt cup after 7 turns of fighting; that’s RB at its best!
We drew the new front lines and followed the refit phase to the purchase step. We decided to wrap the CG for the day and break out a couple of pick-up games:
Jim Cotugno’s Americans defeated Casta’s Germans in “Bloody Bois Jacquesâ€.
Dan and I paired up for the FrF scenario “Bite of the Bassottoâ€. This scenario was over pretty quickly when my Anzacs rolled up Dan’s outnumbered Germans in short order, and we called it an Anzac victory at the end of turn 2. Obviously there’s something with this scenario we didn’t see, because it seems awful hard on the Germans.
We chose the Journal scenario “Brigade Hill†for a rematch. This scenario had long been on my play list, and had been well recommended by several members. Plus, I’ll happily play any scenario by former SoCalASL member Murray McCluskey. It proved to be an excellent choice. Our game went quickly and smoothly; one of those scenarios that seems to be just the right size and have a flow to it that makes it a pleasure to play and replay. 4 hours later, in the last Melee Phase, Dan’s Aussies defeated my Japanese. Great game and great fun against a great player. I would happily play this scenario again as either side.
We cleared out around 9:00 PM.
