Holiday Greetings All:
After a two month hiatus we resumed The Red Barricades Project this month. Mike Cirrincione and Dan Plachta took the Germans; Henry DeVries, Michael Pitts and I took the Russians. Michael came with Dan, and has played SK and some full ASL. Blair Bellamy joined us around lunchtime for a cameo appearance.
We resumed play of the 10/17 CG date at the top of turn 5. I was a little worried about the Russians; both OBA modules were out of commission and there was only a thin line of defenders remaining on the west flank to prevent a German breakout in that sector. The Germans were consolidating their considerable firepower in the buildings along hexrow 5, and Mike had shoved the Germans up the west board edge to assault building B12. The east flank was more secure; our 45L AT gun at level 1 in W10 was chewing up German armor and squads alike, with support from an HMG in level 1 of X15 and a 50mm Mtr on the roof of U17. The Germans had worked their way up to the U6 rubble hex but were channeled by blazes in X6 and W7.
On the German east flank, Dan knew he had to get rid of the 45L Gun, and started shooting at it with an ATR, and after a few tries, sure enough he got the CH that destroyed the Gun and crew. On the German west flank, Mike made a classic building assault with his Strum squads into building B12, and after trading blows, the Russians pulled back in good order to the vicinity of B16. Mike also consolidated the German position west of the stock yards. The Russians held the O6 factory in strength, but were pretty thin in the K10 factory. German advance troops captured the 45L Gun at level 1 of E11, but I was able to push a Russian squad in to recapture the building and hold off more of Mike’s Sturm squads pushing in.
We played through turn 6, with the Russians hoping for a lucky date-end dr, but didn’t get it. At that point we had to wrap up because the K of C needed the hall for a Christmas party that evening. Otherwise, we would have played through turn 7 and the likely end of the CG date. At the end of turn 6 Russian casualties have been 11.5 squads, 2 crews, LMG, MMG, and 45LL. German casualties have been 10 squads, a 9-2, HMG and MMG. Both sides have a wounded 9-1 on board. As always, it has been a blast to play.
We will resume play next month on January 8th.
Regards,
Jim
