Well, it took us from August, 2010 to February, 2011 to play the Oct. 17th CG date. We completed the Oct. 18th CG date in just two sessions; we’re definitely hitting our stride.
We had 5 members plus a cameo appearance from Scott Thompson for our April 9th meeting of The Red Barricades Project. Stephan Tourville and Mike Cirrincione lead the Germans against me, Jim Cotugno and Henry DeVries as the Russians.
Fighting resumed on turn 4 of the Oct 18th CG date, with the Germans continuing to drive hard into the factories and to the west along Tramvaynaya Street and the rail lines. On the east side, Mike’s Russians consolidated their position in the O6 factory (Workshop #4), then pushed into the big Q13 factory (Main Mechanical Workshop.) Three hexes in they hit the Russian MLR, unleashing a gaggle of Miltia in reserve stiffened by some 1st line squads and a KV. Meanwhile a Russian 80 OBA module fell behind the attackers into Workshop #4. By turn 6 the Germans had fallen back to a two hex toe-hold in the Main Mechanical Workshop.
On the west side, Stephan consolidated his capture of the L13 factory (Workshop #15) and used his 100 OBA with good effect to put pressure on L17 factory (the Foundry Hall) Here the Russians fell back behind their 70 OBA and organized their reserves (mostly militia and SMG squads.) The position was stiffened by a platoon of 447’s stacked with a HMG and commissar in a defilade position behind the factory walls. A small turn 6 counter-attack pushed the Germans back to a toe-hold in the Foundry Hall. The Germans had better luck along the rail line, where there was a blind-spot in the Russian OBA. Here Stephan’s MG kill stacks made short work of any Russians that stepped into forward positions. The Germans pushed into the F17 factory (the Warehouse) which the Russians had fortified and held in strength. The Germans pushed half way through the Warehouse before being stopped by another KV, which shrugged off repeated strikes from three Stukas.
The Russians got lucky when the CG ended on turn 6. Casualties were very light (by RB standards); each side lost 11 squads and no leaders. The only equipment lost was two Russian LMG’s and a 50mm Mtr. The front line now runs roughly straight from the Volga along the gully at hexrox 8 (Finger Gully) to the Main Mechanical Workshop (Q13), up through Workshop #15 (L13) and into the Foundry Hall (L17), half way through the Warehouse (F17) and off the west edge at A16.
The Red Barricades Project will resume with the Oct 19th CG date on May 14th. Stay tuned!
