We had four members plus a cameo from Karl Johnson for our May meeting of the Red Barricades Project. Dan Plachta and John Lehman were in command of the Germans against me and Jim Cotugno on the Russian side.

We resumed the fighting with Russian player turn 5 of the October 22nd CG date. Up until this point the Germans had been having it pretty much their own way, with the kill ration running 12 to 4 in their favor. Jim and I now tried to get that ratio a little more in the Russian favor.

In the Russian prep fire two of my HMG’s went on a tear and started cutting up German squads. Just as bad for the Germans, they were rolling high, and soon turned four 5-4-8’s into 4-4-7’s. And while my guys on the west side were trying to put the hurt on the Germans along the west board edge, Jim launched a couple of local counter-attacks through the factories. But Dan, running the Germans on the west side, kept the pressure on, getting his 10-3 up to the front line and keeping his 100mm OBA coming down on my hard-pressed men.

By the end of turn 6 it was pretty much a blood bath. My men were cowering in some cellars to avoid the German 10-3 and the OBA dialed in on them, while the Germans in the center were desperately trying to avoid Jim’s Russian kill stack and hold on to their gains. By mutual agreement we decided to call it a CG date with the end of turn 6.

The final tally was 24.5 Russian squads dead against 11.5 German squads. But while the Russians lost only one leader (7-0) the Germans lost 3 (a 10-3, 8-1 and 8-0.) Even after their horrific losses, the Russians retained nearly 60 squads and 18 leaders. They’re going to need them; the upcoming October 23rd CG date opens up the entire west board edge.

We had our usual ‘gamers lunch’ compliments of the St. Crispin’s Irregulars, and wrapped up around 6:30. It was another great day of Red Barricades.
