We had five players in attendance for this month’s edition of The Red Barricades Project. However, if one were actually going to play Red Barricades, it would be helpful to have a board to play on. The problem was I got all the way to Anaheim before I realized I’d forgotten to load the board and RB counter trays into the car before I left.

Ok, so Red Barricades wasn’t going to happen. But let us not forget: “All ASL is Good”. I had my travel set in the car, and that provided more than enough counters and boards for a couple of scenarios. Dan Plachta and Casta paired up for the Journal scenario “The Art of Dying”. I was surprised to learn that, although both are founding members of SoCalASL, they had never played each other. In the end, Casta’s Italians defeated Dan’s Russians. Both thought the scenario was well worth the effort.

And Jim Cotugno and I paired up for the Dispatches scenario “The Backhand Blow”. John Lehman joined us while we were pulling counters, and he and Jim took the Germans against my Russians. I must say this is quite a scenario, though a bit too ambitious for the amount of time we had available. But man, it’s pretty cool. The Germans get a solid combined arms force of SS infantry supported by Tigers and Pz IV’s. But they have very steep VC’s, and a solid force of Russian infantry backed by some T-34’s in their way. We had a hell of a lot of fun. In the end this was just one of those scenarios where nothing really went right for me despite my best efforts. I pulled the plug and conceded on turn 4. We all thought it would have been pretty close though. We all liked this scenario a lot, and I’d happily try it again.

We had our usual ‘gamer lunch’ served by Harmon Ward and the St. Crispin’s crew. It turned out to be a great day, despite sweating our asses off all afternoon without AC.
