October Game Day in Sherman Oaks

We had four members for the October edition of our ASL Game Day at Paper Hero’s in Sherman Oaks.

I had picked up the newest Death to Fascism pack at ASLOK. It has a RB scenario, “The Living Dead”, that I really wanted to try, and we agreed to try it as a four player game. The dice gave me and James Quinn the defending Germans against Eric Visnowski and Robert Barratt as the Russians.

Having read “Island of Fire”, I was very familiar with the scenario situation.  It’s December, 1942, and the Germans are hunkered down in the rubble of the Barricady, short of everything except the sick and wounded.  The scenario plays on the southern RB map, primarily in the area of Bread Factory #2 and Workshop 32.  The Russians have two groups of assault troops, one in the southwest corner, and other in the southeast, just south of the Tank Farm.  They have to capture 13 factory hexes, or all four of the small factories south of the gully.  As in all DTF scenarios, both sides get points to purchase their support weapons from a chart provided.  James and I chose 3 LMG’s, 3 MMG’s and a HMG.  The Russians chose 2 FT’s.  E.V. took the eastern force and made a show of going after Workshop 32.  But finding it too well defended, shifted south of the gully.  Robert did a head fake towards the gully, but then dashed north along the rail embankment.  By turn 3 James and I knew what they had in mind, and quickly shifted our MG’s to rooftop locations to try to interdict Robert’s dash into the large factories to the north.  Meanwhile, Eric’s FT’s blasted my southern defenders, and made slow but steady progress.

With time running out, we called this one a Russian win when it was obvious Robert’s squads would be able to grab enough factory hexes for the win. We all thought it was an excellent scenario and quite fun.

The survivors adjourned to Sizzler for late dinner.  It was another great day of ASL.
