    Hi there SoCalASLers,

Just thought I'd drop in the forum and introduce myself before showing up at one of the meetings. ;)

My name is Stephan, and I'm currently working my way through SK1. I have purchased the full rules, however, along with Beyond Valor 3rd ed, and I plan to try to make the jump to full once I'm comfortable with the SK. Hopefully I won't have to work through SK2 and 3….

Anyway, I do have some limited wargaming experience, having just gotten into Combat Commander: Europe and some of the Lock n' Load games. Having seen the ASL rules now though, I see that most games borrow their mechanics directly from ASL…. which of course makes me want to play even more!

I've already made contact on the Gamesquad forums with another SoCal member (I think it was King Scott) who told me that you all have a couple SK players right now. So if those players are looking for opponents, either in person or on VASL, then hit me up and we can work out a time to play.

About me: I'm 30 years old and still a student at CSULB. I should be graduating in the spring (hopefully). I'm a USMC vet, and did a tour in Iraq for the initial invasion (you can see pictures at my website http://www.81splatoon.com). I live in Garden Grove. I think that's about everything that's interesting, so I'll end it here and just say that I hope to meet up with you gents soon!

    Hi Stephan,

I'm also a student (a perpetual one at that) and I live in Placentia. I play SK, and there are about 5 more people in the club who are active and also are just starting out and play SK.

I'd recommend that you get and play through SK2 and 3 before you get into full ASL. You don't have to, of course. It's just that the ASLRB chapters for Guns and Vehicles are an abomination of complication and learning how to actually use either from the RB is nigh unto impossible.

If you'd like to come over to my place and play a bit I'm always up for it. Contact me at candicej79@yahoo.com.

We're also meeting on Aug 16th at The Realm which is near Brea Mall. Just show up and you hopefully will have someone who will play you a game.

    Welcome aboard Stephan,

I am working my way through the Starter kits myself and would be up for a game, the problem is that I live out in Ventura County so a face to face might be tough unless we meet at a game day or the up coming Burning Wreck BBQ. I have not figure out how to use VASL yet.

Bring your “A”game when you play Candice she is very good.

Hope we can get a game in soon.

    Hey Stephan!

Glad you found us. Although I'm up in Oregon, I hope to meet you at West Coast Melee. So many SK players, this is awesome! Don't forget to hook up with the club members at the upcoming events. The old Grognards will show you the ropes and help you make a transition from SK to full ASL.

    Greetings Stephan!

    Welcome

I am also a SK player.
I agree with Candice that it would be better to play SK2 & 3 to learn the ordnance and AFV rules.
The ASLRB does not lend itself to new players. The rules are spread out in different chapters of the rulebook and include many special cases that you will almost never use.

At the last LA Games Day at Gameology
3 of the 7 games played were SK Scenarios
so you should fit right in.
Hope to see you on the 16th at the Realm.

Hmm. I have to say, having started with SK about 3 years ago,
and now playing full ASL most of the time, that I didn't learn
    ASL from the rulebook.

I learned by playing – I got the basics down from the SK's
(mostly SK1) and then played others, who were very helpful.
I looked up stuff as I went along.

Now, I'm not the greatest player by any stretch of the imagination,
but sometimes I win a game!

So, don't let the ASLRB DM you. There are plenty of players in the
club who will be happy to walk you through full ASL when you're
    ready.

Wow, thanks for all the replies!

I'll do all I can to make it to the next meet. And thanks for the advice about working through the SKs… I may have to pick them up after all. !lol

What's that? Someone needs some ASL product? Funny how the Club JUST HAPPENS to have such products available. Well…to members. So, Stephen, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the fold, encourage you to join our Band of Goofballs (for the paltry sum of $15.00) and then partake of the ASL goodness that is the SoCal ASL Club Store.

Well, ok, maybe you should come and play a bit…that would be nice too.

And does anyone else find it just terrific that we have a big enough group of SK Players that they now help draw NEW SK Players into the Club? All the Old Grognards now have to wonder if we can ever transition these good folks to regular ASL…perhaps SK will be the ASL of the future! A devolution!!!

    Anyway, welcome, Stephen!

I for one think it's a great thing. SK is a great game, and though I'm sure ASL full is a better game, if I had only SK for the rest of my life I'd still want to play it a great deal. I'm glad to see all the new people in the club, including me, playing SK every game day.

It's not devolution but just the first step of evolution
    to full ASL.

SK is the seedcorn from where Full ASLers are grown :?

Aha! Devolution of ASL, Evolution of SK…into the NEW ASL! What I meant was…if so many players keep playing SK, then more SK product will be produced and then more SK will be played until this cycle produces so much SK goodness that ASL quietly fades and SK rules the roost!
