We had 11 players and a cameo appearance from Matt Cicero for our June Game Day at Emerald Knights in Burbank:
Blair Bellamy’s Germans defeated Dave Rosner’s Poles in the night scenario “No Way Outâ€.
Ed Esparza’s Americans defeated Ken Tee’s Germans in the classic SL remake scenario “Bitche Salientâ€.
And because they still had a couple of hours to kill before closing, they matched up again for “The Guards Counterattack†on the demo board set that EV brought.
Rob Stai took the Germans against Mike Cirrincione’s French in the Out of the Bunker scenario “Point 247â€. In an excellent and close game Rob’s Germans squeezed out a victory in the last CC phase.
Eric Visnoski took on Dave Nicholas and Bill Yuen in “Riding with the Kingâ€. EV’s Germans were victorious over Dave and Bill’s Russians. This looks like a cool scenario, I’ve moved it onto my play list.
And Kevin Kiff and I paired up for “Mountain Huntersâ€. I’ve been hoping to pair up with Kevin for quite a while now, and I’m glad we were able to finally get a game in. I disclosed to Kevin that I’d played this scenario a couple of times, but he was up for it, and it’s a cool scenario. I gave him the choice of sides and he took the Russians. I took the Romanians on a strong right hook and managed to capture both the town and the high ground behind it for a win. Kevin played an excellent game and we had a great time. I’m looking forward to our rematch.
We adjourned for lunch at Larry’s Hot Dogs as usual, and the survivors afterward retired to Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank for our traditional late-night dinner. The food was good as always.
This was our first meeting using the paid reservation system. I am quite thankful we chose to go that route, as the store was packed solid most of the day. Last month the store management forced us to cram 12 guys onto two 6’ tables, while numerous other tables sat dead empty (but reserved for other groups.) So, and I hate to admit it, I took a little perverse pleasure this month telling the Magic players to buzz off from the tables in our reserved section.
Remember, because of a scheduling conflict at the store, the Emerald Knights Game Day will be postponed by one week, from the usual 3rd Saturday to the 4th; July 23rd.
June 21, 2011 at 9:51 pm #6130Matt “Rolling Hot” CiceroKeymasterThanks for the win, but our game ended too early to call. We were just starting Turn 4 when Dave had to leave. The Poles were making slow and steady progress and there were a lot of them still Cloaked. On the other hand, I felt certain my reinforcements could stem the tide, just like in the Aftermath. Seriously, barring some lucky rolls on Dave's part my AFVs would have ruled the board. ROAR has this overwhelmingly Polish though. It was extremely interesting to play Night, both more and less complicated than I thought it would be. And this was my third game day Doomed Battalions scenario, I have to say I'm liking the Early War stuff. Maybe I can talk Ed into “Fighting Back” when we meet at Gameology in a couple of weeks…
June 22, 2011 at 12:31 am #6132Jim AikensKeymasterI'm sorry to hear that ROAR has it as a dog. It sure looked like a cool scenario. Early war and night… what's not to like?
June 23, 2011 at 3:55 am #6131Paul SimonsenMemberWhat a great turnout! I really enjoyed Riding With the King with Bill and Dave. This was my second playing as the defender and both games varied wildly.I plan to add it to the Reccomended Scenarios thread here on the SOCALASL list. By the way gents, if you have played something you particularly enjoyed PLEASE add it to the reccomended scenario thread. Hell It has some 3000 views. Also, with gameday attendance doing very well at the various venues it would be nice to see some AARs,. You don't have to write a book, just a short synopsis will do, Our club is generating some 20 to 25 games a month! ,surely we can generate an AAR once in a while. [ Kevin's fantastic effort notwithstanding]
Regards, EV
