We had 5 members in attendance for our December meeting at Gameology. Jim Svette took the Germans against Eric Visnowski and Scott Thompson as the Americans in the AP scenario “Bazooka Town”. In had hard-fought battle the Americans came out on top.

And Dave Kocot took the Russians against my Japanese in the AP scenario “The Katanas Come Out at Night”. Ed Esparza had recently played it, and highly recommended it. Dave wanted something challenging, and this was certainly the right choice. Two companies of mostly elite, well-led Japanese squads assaulting a hill held by two companies of Russian infantry backed by a 70 mm OBA module and a couple of tankettes. And did I mention it's a Night assault? Yeah, complicated.

From my end, my dice did not cooperate all day. Dave's dice were working for him.. sort of. Even though we both had a SAN of 5 I think we had a total of 2 Sniper attacks between us. And Dave missed his first Radio contact roll, then pulled a red when he did get contact. Unfortunately his radio operator got overrun before he could try again. That definitely hurt him, as did pulling the wrong tanks, ones without the CMG's that would have helped on the counter-attack. My Japanese took a beating getting up the hill, but eventually they got close enough to start the Banzai charges and managed to break in on one flank. All in all it was quite a fight, with both of us rapidly running out of troops. Dave's last-turn counter attack came up short and we called it a Japanese win.

We both really liked this scenario, but it's definitely graduate-level ASL. Dave played his usual great game and I felt fortunate to come away with the win. We both had a blast.

We made our usual trek to The Hat for lunch, and wrapped it up around 9:30. It was a hell of a day and a lot of fun!
