We had eight members at the March edition of our ASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth.
Sal Palaez and Dave Rosner paired up for “Grand Hotel Britania” from Dispatches from the Bunker, with Sal's Germans defeating Dave's Brit's.
Dave Nicholas' Japanese defeated Ed Esparza's Brits in “Maximum Agression”. Because the game got over quickly, the switched sides and played it again. In this second playing Ed won as the Japanese.
Phil Seymour's Germans defeated Mike Soffa's Americans in “Deadly Assumptions.”
And I paired up with Eric Visnowski in “Show of Force”, with Eric taking the defending Russians against my Germans. The ROAR has this somewhat pro-Russian, but we decided to play it straight up. Eric had a good set up, and I played fairly conservatively for the first few turns. Luckily for me, Eric was a little slow getting his troops back, and I was able to cut off a large portion of them, though Eric was able to bag one of my PzIVF2's in the process. In the end, it came down to Russian squads in two different hexes, both with tanks in bypass, one of which was as Melee. I pulled the Flametank adjacent to the Melee, and piled two stacks of 2 squads next to the other. But then I made a fatal mistake. Even though I was well below the CVP cap, as my last move I drove the tank out of Melee to avoid being flamed. That freed Eric's squad to fire into one the adjacent stacks in DF, where a 1 MC broke both squads and an 8-1. My Flametank burned down one of the remaining squads in AF. But I couldn't break the other squad. So I advanced in 2 squads for a 2-1. Eric's squad missed his attack, and I rolled a 7, enough to reduce, but not eliminate the Russian squad, leaving one unbroken Russian MMC and giving Eric the victory. If I had not moved the tank out of the other hex and allowed the 8 flat shot, I would have had another squad and 8-1 in the final CC, and would have killed off the final Russian squad. Ah, the fortunes of war… But what a great game! We both had a terrific time, and though we thought the scenario is slightly pro-Russian, giving the Germans the balance (deleting a Russian ATR) should do the trick. We both thought it was worth playing again.
We decided on San Carlo Deli for lunch, and called in our order to save time. That worked out great, and lunch was delicious as always. The survivors adjourned to The Habit for dinner, where we enjoyed eating on the patio. It was a great day of ASL.
