We had five members for the December edition of our ASL Game Day at the Guild House in Bellflower yesterday.
Eric Visnowski's Japanese fell to Dan Plachta's Brits in the LFT Deluxe scenario “Playing Uno”
And because their game got over quickly, the set up “Full of Fire”, with Dan's Americans defeating EV's Germans.
That left me to take the Germans against Jon Jaramillo and John Lehman as the Russians in the Deluxe scenario “Breakout”. This scenario requires the Germans to fight their way off the board, with a powerful Russian force in pursuit, and two smaller flanking forces trying to cut them off. I set up my Germans clustered together and ready to high-tail it to the exit area as quickly as possible. I left four HIP half squads and the AT gun to delay John's pursuit force. At the end of the first movement phase, I had three 548's with LMG's and the 9-2 within 3 hexes of the possible Russian flanking forces entry hexes. My rear guard had some extremely good luck on the bottom of turn one. My AT Gun killed both of John's IS-2's with side shots. Meanwhile, my 9-2 blasted Jon's infantry as they tried to enter, and my nearby 'shrek killed the OT-34. On turn 2, the 9-2 killed off Jon's only remaining blocking troops, and the remainder exited for a quick victory.
It probably took longer to set up that scenario than to actually play it. But by then, John had to head out, so Jon and I set up the small, excellent all-infantry Journal scenario “By Ourselves” Jon took the attacking Norwegians against my defending Germans. Jon did a nice job as the attacker, but came up just a little short in the last movement phase, and we awarded the Germans the win. I forgot how good this scenario is; its perfect for learning basic fire-and-movement infantry tactics and conducting a fighting withdrawal. And it plays pretty quickly. Its great for a 'second scenario of the day' type of playing.
We made our usual trip to Sizzler for lunch, which was quite enjoyable as usual.
It was another great day at one of our best venues.
