February 10th Game Day in Bellflower AAR

We had another excellent turnout of twelve players, including another new guy, for our February Game Day at The Guild House in Bellflower:

Eric Visnowski's Finn's defeated Peter Strand's Russians in “Armored Car Savikurki”.

David 'Special K' Kocot's Americans defeated Jim Svette's Germans in “Morgan's Stand”.

Tracy Wood's Germans defeated new guy Ric Hammond's Brits in “Tally Ho!”.

Stance Nixon's Germans defeated Dan Plachta's Brits in “Flight of Fancy”.

Because Scott Thompson was going to leave early, he paired up with me as the Hungarians against Dave Nicholas and Dave 'DL' Lewis' Romanians in the revised version of “End Station Budapest”. By the time we had set-up's done, EV and Peter's game had cleared. So Scott kibitzed with the new guys and EV took his place with me.

There's an adage in ASL that the guy with the best plan will usually win. We set up about half our force on each board, with most of the dummies on the left. We surrounded the left side of the victory building with wire, hoping to draw the Romanians into a trap. It was a good plan, but putting half of our force on the right-hand board was about twice as many as we should have. DL took the Romanian flanking force, and effectively tied up about half our OB on the right-hand board. Nick took about 3/4 of the Romanians and hit my left side like a sledgehammer. My Hungarians held up at first, but soon became overwhelmed. By turn 3, all of the squads on my side were broken or eliminated, and Nick had an open door to the lightly held VC building. By then all the other games had cleared, and it was obvious that even with the wire, there was no way 3 Hungarian squads could hold the building for 7 turns against about 20 Romanian squads. We called it a Romanian win. Clearly the better plan had prevailed.

We had our usual lunch at Burger King, and the survivors retired to Chris & Pit's for our traditional late dinner. It was a great day for a WCM warm-up!
