We had five members in attendance for our first game day after WCM:
Dave Nicholas' N.Koreans defeated Ed Esparza's Americans in “The Grist Mill”. And because their game got over pretty quickly, the set up “Guns for St. Barbara”, where Nick's Americans and Ed's Germans fought to a draw as time ran out.
Most people know that it takes little effort to draw Eric Visnowski into a Deluxe scenario, and Dave Lewis and I were in the mood for something on the big boards. So we set up “First to Strike”, with Eric taking the defending Russians against me and D.L. as the Germans. We decided on a hard left attack, with D.L. taking a light force, one StuG, and the OBA on the right, facing the factory, while I took the majority of the troops and two StuG's and hit the left very hard. Our initial assault went pretty much as planned. I dropped HIP on our phone spotter in order to prevent concealment gain in our pre-reg blast area. I wasn't too worried about that, since the 100mm OBA would make short work of those enemy units within LOS. What I didn't count on was the Russian Sniper, who quickly KIA'd the spotter. Ok, not good, but we had another 8-0 nearby, and D.L. moved him in to recover the phone. Unfortunately it took five attempts to recover it. That took our OBA out of the picture for two full turns. In the meantime, EV's dice got hot; for example two 6+1 shots wiped out our 9-2 led kill stack. But by turn four our OBA was back, and EV's rolls had cooled off. By turn five we had four of the five VC buildings we needed, though Eric was threatening to grab two buildings on the right. It could have been anyone's game when we ran out of time and called it a draw. We all agreed it was a fun and exciting game.
We had our usual lunch at San Carlo Deli, and our traditional late dinner at The Habit. It was another great day of ASL!
