We had 8 members at our SoCalASL Game Day at the Guild House in Bellflower:
Gerard Unterreiner's Americans defeated Stance Nixon's Germans in “Lost Opportunities”.
Dan Plachta's Japanese fell to Eric Visnowski's Americans in “Phillipine Firemen”.
Dave Lewis' Germans defeated Dave Nicholas' Russians in “Castlekeep”.
And Fen Yan and I paired up for the Deluxe scenario “From Bad to Wurselen”.
This scenario was designed by Chas Smith, and I have a high opinion of his work. It originally appeared in 'Hell on Wheels' and then was republished by Heat of Battle. We played the latter version. Fen took the defending Americans and I took the attacking Germans. This scenario has a reinforced company of Americans, well armed with a .50 Cal, an HMG, three MMG's and three BAZ's, defending two city boards, and a mostly open/woods board on the German right. They also get five Shermans and a 57L AT Gun. The Germans get a solid, reinforced first line company supported by four Jagdpanthers. They need to accumulate 95 VP's, earned by CVP, building control and exit VP's.
The Jagd's are powerful. They have limited HE and only a BMG. But they're worth 8 VP's each to exit and can easily dispatch the Shermans. I decided on a balanced attack, leading with the infantry and entering all the Jagd's onto the open board on the right, but holding them well back. The open board was lightly defended. Fen kept his Shermans well in his backfield, to counterattack or flank the Jagd's as opportunity provided. My plan was to sweep through the right, clear the board, kill the AT Gun, then turn left and hit the city boards from the side. Most of my infantry force would press forward through the city boards. The Americans have a lot of firepower and are tough the dig out of the stone buildings. The Germans have to be very patient and systematic. They have plenty of time, and they need to use it all. My plan worked very well, and I was happy with the win, but I could see where a German attack could go south in a hurry, especially if they pressed to quickly. Fen had a solid plan and played a good game. We speculated that perhaps the Americans should set their tanks up in the buildings. They would be very hard to take out and would slow down the German infantry attack significantly. We really enjoyed the scenario, and both thought we'd play it again as either side.
We had our usual lunch at Burger King, and the survivors trekked over to Chris and Pit's for our usual late dinner.
This will be our last Game Day at the Guild House's current location. Next month we will meet at their new location north of Highway 91, at 16631 Bellflower Blvd. The new store will be larger, with plenty of parking, and several lunch places within a short walk. Our most popular Game Day venue is about to become even better!
