We had 12 members in attendance, plus a cameo from Sal Palaez, for the April edition of our ASL Game Day at Emerald Knights:
Bill Yuen and Geoff Coward paired up for a ‘classic oldies’ theme: Geoff defeated Bill in “Guards Counterattackâ€, after which they played “Gavin Takeâ€, with Geoff’s Americans defeating Bill’s Germans.
In “Rude Mood†from the new Action Pack, Nadir Elfarra’s Free French defeated Mike Soffa’s Germans.
Mike Cirrincione’s Americans defeated Blair Bellamy’s Germans in “Failure to Assimilateâ€. Blair got his revenge later in the day when his Russians defeated Mike’s Germans in “Clash at Boroslavaâ€.
In an all day slug-fest, Kevin Kiff’s Germans squeaked out a victory over Dave Nicholas’ Americans in “Gabriel's Horn”.
And because both Phil Seymour and Dave Rosner had to leave early, we set up a four player game of “A Bloody Wasteâ€, with Eric Visnowski and Dave commanding the attacking Americans against me and Phil as the defending Germans. It turned out to be a good choice. I think this is my favorite scenario from AP8. This scenario has it all, with a sizable group of Americans (including 6-6-8 commandos) supported by 10 TD's and Shermans attacking across open ground, taking on a group of 1st line Germans supported by StuG's, a Wirblewind and a Marder. The Germans also get 12 mine factors, which Phil and I used for two 6 factor minefields in building hexes we thought the Americans would through. Sure enough, Eric moved an Ami squad into one of the buildings, and Phil rolled snakes; a KIA. On the next turn Eric moved an Ami squad into the next mined building hex, and even said, “yeah, I know there are probably mines in there, but I'm hoping you don't roll another '2'”. My roll: snakes again! So the following turn Eric moved yet another squad into one of the mine hexes… and I didn't roll a '2'… I rolled a '3' for a K/ result. But Eric then boxcarred the surviving HS! Three full squads dead to a couple of lousy 6 factor minefields. Surely the deadliest in ASL history!
In the end, it was a great game, and came down to control of the last victory building. But the Germans held on for the win. We thought this was a fun scenario, and I would definitely play it again.
We adjourned for our usual chili dog lunch at Larry's, and had a great late night dinner at Bob's Big Boy. What an awesome day!
