We had an outstanding turnout of 11 members for our April ASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth on Saturday.
Mike Soffa's Russians defeated Sal Palaez' Germans in “Show of Force”.
Dave Nicholas' Germans narrowly defeated Eric Visnowski's Americans in “T Patchers”.
Phil Seymour's Poles defeated Ed Esparza and James Quinn's Germans in “Forest of Death”.
Oscar Valenzuela and Blair Bellamy paired up for “Clash at Borisova”, with Blair's Germans defeating Oscar's Russians. And because they still had time, they paired up for “88's at Zon”. But time ran out on this second game, and they called it a draw.
Thanks to an surprise CalTrans highway closure, I arrived an hour late. Fortunately, Dan Plachta was kind enough to wait for me, and we quickly picked out “Final Victory” from a March Madness pack. This is a 'clear the building' scenario, with 25 Partisan squads assaulting a 7 hex, board 45 building defended by 15 second line and conscript German squads. The building has a cellar, ground and first levels, and a single hex tower that extends up through levels two and three. To make it interesting, the Partisans can use sewer movement and are armed with two FT's and six DC's. The pack comes with a player aid for the building (like the one in Dogs of War). We used it extensively. Frankly, with 44 squads and a seven hex building, I don't think you could play the scenario without it. The problem is that the player aid creates a 3D chess effect, where you'd constantly trying to visualize where all your units are, and who can see what.
Dan took his attack into the building like the skilled player he is. He had guys coming in from two sides and up through the sewers. I'm not ashamed to say my dice kept me in the game, and for the most part felt I kept the upper hand. Then I made a fatal error of moving an entire platoon into what I thought was a save hex, only to realize too late that Dan's remaining FT was in the basement next to me with a LOS. His DF attack roasted my platoon and pretty much ended it for me. With time running out, we called it a Partisan victory, and a well earned one for Dan.
We decided to go to The Munch Box for lunch. The survivors retired to Marie Calendars for our traditional late dinner.
We had a great turnout and a great day.
