We had five members for our ASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth.
Blair Bellamy's Germans defeated Sal Pelaez' Americans in “Another Summer's Day”.
Mike Soffa and Dave Nicholas took the attacking Russians against my Germans in “Where Iron Crosses Grow”. I've played this before and really liked it. This scenario is set near Berlin in April, 1945. The Germans get a mixed bag of infantry that are well-led and armed to the teeth. They're supported by a 75L AT Gun, two PzIVJ's and a ton of trenches and wire. However, they have an ELR of 2 and Ammo Shortage. The Russians get a powerful attacking force of 20 well-led squads backed by six T34-85's. On turn 3 they get 3 more squads and 3 more T34-M43's. They have to capture every building on the board to win.
I set up my entire defense in an arc extending out about 3 hexes from the center of the west board edge. It encompassed three of the victory buildings, of which I only had to hold one to win. This position allowed my infantry to skulk a bit, and avoid being encircled by marauding Russian armor. Everything went into this position except for my four conscript squads. Those went into the only 2 hex building for a die in place defense. Nick and Mike came on hard and fast, and their initial assault went well for me. I picked off two squads as KIA and CR'd another. Unfortunately, starting on the bottom of turn 1, the scenario went to shit for me. Nick gave me four PF shots in my Prep, all of which missed. Other shots from my MLR were completely unproductive. I'll spare you more of this sad story. Let's just say that this was a scenario where everything I did went wrong, and everything Nick and Mike did worked in spades. (At one point, as if to taunt me, Nick drove a T34 along my MLR, through 3 wire hexes, adjacent to a full German squad in each hex. Nick rolled 3 consecutive colored “1”'s; clearing 3 wire hexes, without bogging. Meanwhile, all of my DFF point black PF shots missed.) Yeah, it was that bad. I threw in the towel at the end of turn 4. You know, the game is like that sometimes. But hey, all ASL is good. Nick and Mike played a great game and deserved the win. Despite this sad playing, I would happily try it again as either side.
We enjoyed our usual lunch on the patio at San Carlo Deli. Since our games cleared early, we drove over to “Paper Heroes”, a game store on Burbank Blvd about 3 miles west of Emerald Knights. I'll talk more about that in a future post. But for now, suffice it to say that we were all quite impressed with the store. We then adjourned to a nearby Marie Calendar's for a relaxing late dinner.
