We had six members in attendance for the April edition of our Los Angeles Game Day at Gameology, plus a cameo appearance from Matt Cicero:
Dave Nicholas’ Germans defeated Dan Plachta’s Americans in the Action Pack scenario “Crossfireâ€.
Eric Visnowski and Rob Stai paired up for “Bonny Nouvelle†from the High Ground pack, with Rob’s Vichy French defeating EV’s Brits. Both reported this to be an excellent scenario.
I started out playing on the American side with Dan in “Crossfireâ€. But when Blair Bellamy showed later on in the afternoon, I abandoned Dan to his fate and joined Blair for “Land Sharkey†from the recently arrived Dispatches from the Bunker issue. This scenario has a mixed force of Germans defending a small village/church complex against a group of elite Brits, who have to cross a lot of open ground to get the job done. The dice game me the Brits. I have to say, the first three turns were painful, with my troops grinding forward and getting bitch-slapped every step of the way. On turn 4 some armor arrived to lend a hand, and I’d finally got my troops within striking distance of the village. By turn 5 my men were over the wall and I had squirted a hero into the ground level of the church, setting up my final turn 6 assault. It came down to the last fire phase, when my surviving troops were just not able to break Blair’s surviving Germans, and he took a hard-fought win.
It was an interesting game, with some interesting swings of the dice. Blair had a squad and LMG that wreaked havoc on my advancing troops for three turns, shrugging off countless MC’s, until finally breaking at the bottom of turn 4. My OB started with one Hero, and I managed to generate 3 more over the course of five turns. Frankly, they were what kept me in the game. It seemed unwinnable for me on turn 4, but ended up become a down-to-the-last-DR playing. We both agreed we’d try it again. This is a good tournament size scenario (it took us about 4 hours including set-up.)
We made our usual pilgrimage to The Hat for our usual excellent lunch. In all, it was another great day of ASL. We couldn’t ask for more!
