We had four players, including the return of Mike Meeks after a two year absence, plus a cameo from Bruce Kirkaldy, for the April edition of our ASL Game Day at Gamelogy.
Fen Yan's SS defeated Peter Strand's Russians in the On All Fronts Deluxe scenario “Fight for the Anti-Tank Ditch”. This is a cool scenario, but I really think they could have come up with a more clever name.
And Mike Meeks and I paired up for the AP scenario “Maryuma's Stronghold”. One thing about Mike, for those who don't know him, he likes scenarios that use the whole rulebook. The last time we played, it was Russian cavalry vs Japanese cavalry in the Mongolian desert. So this time he wanted to do Japanese and this Japanese vs. Chinese scenario looked very cool. Mike took the attacking Chinese.
The Japanese have to defend a small town near a rail line with a couple of platoons of 1st line infantry supported by a 70* Inf Gun. The Chinese force consists of 15 squads of crack GMD troops, supported by a 70mm OBA . The terrain surrounding the village is pretty restrictive, with quite a lot of bamboo and swamp, so I decided to set up in the village and focus on the northerly approaches, which I thought was the most probable axis of attack. Mike surprised me by coming on way to the northeast, which was a long walk, but much better protected. This unexpected approach forced me to pull all of my defenders out of position, and set up a new MLR on the fly. Luckily for me, this approach is somewhat long, and I had time to redeploy my troops into a decent, but less ideal, defensive line. Mike hit my main line on turn four, but had a lot of trouble getting his OBA into the action. Finally, when he had it dialed into a perfect spot, he broke the radio. He had more bad luck when he pushed three 5-3-7 squads into CC against my striped 1st line squad, but lost the Ambush roll, and then lost all three squads in CC. I call Japanese/Chinese scenarios “everyone dies” scenarios, because they almost always end up with a couple of striped Japanese crews fighting for the last building against a couple of Chinese half squads and a wounded leader. This fight wasn't much different, but in the end, I had just enough Japanese survivors to hold off the Chinese for the win.
We had a lot of fun with this scenario and we both thought we'd try it again as either side. On a side note; when we returned from our usual lunch at The Hat, there was a fellow sitting next to our area with his young son and daughter, setting up a SL version of Guards Counter Attack. He introduced himself as Hector Mireles and was very interested in getting into ASL. He joined the Club on the spot. I'm sure we'll see him next month either at Gameology or Bellflower.
All in all, it was a great day and we all had great fun.
