We had a solid 7 members in attendance for the August edition of our ASL Game Day at The Guild House in Bellflower.
Dave Nicholas' Americans barely defeated Stance Nixon's Germans in “Raff's Rules”.
Blair Bellamy and Scott Thompson's Germans defeated Dan Plachta's Brits in “Castle on the Horizon” from the most recent Journal.
And Gerard Unterreiner took the Americans against my defending Germans in “A Simple Solution”. I like this scenario. The Germans get to secretly record a bonus force that can affect the victory conditions. I think its challenging for both the attacker and defender. The attacker has 18 6-6-6 squads plus some 3-3-7 HS's manning 2 DC's and 2 FT's with good leadership. Although its a powerful force, it's always a challenge to attack with 6 morale troops. The Germans have to keep the Americans out of their victory buildings and get a company of 4-4-7's and two platoons of conscripts, armed with a HMG and 4 LMG's. The Germans have to conduct a steady fighting withdrawal with mediocre troops. No less a challenge than the attacker.
I chose to add 2 MMG's with 2-2-8 crews. The Germans get a nominal number of concealment and the Americans have on-board set-up. So I deployed two conscript squads to cover up my squads manning MG's and keep Gerard guessing about my bonus force choice and where my MG's actually were. I split my force evenly between the two boards, with the HMG and 8-1 on the far left to help nail down that flank. I put an MMG on the 1st level of a building on the hill, where it could cover the some of the roads on both the right and left sides of the board. I deployed the remaining MG's for FL's and sneaky between-building shots. Gerard set up evenly on both boards and moved forward. My set-up forced a lot of -2 shots that he couldn't avoid. But my very cold dice meant I wasn't able to do damage, or even slow the Americans moving in. Gerard took advantage of that. He kept his men moving forward without taking a lot of risks or giving me many -2 shots, while keeping the pressure on. My troops fell back steadily, but I was forced to sacrifice squads for time, and I wasn't inflicting much damage. Finally, with time running out, Gerard advanced his troops into the streets, daring me to stand and shoot, or fall back to the final VC buildings. I chose to stand a shoot, and I managed to severely damage the Americans enough that it was obvious they couldn't recover in time to secure the final buildings. So we called it a German win. Gerard did a great job with his attack, and as I've observed in previous games, handled his troops with skill. This scenario could have easily gone the other way. It was a fun and challenging game
