We had 11 players in attendance for the August edition of our ASL Game Day at Emerald Knights.

Dave Nicholas and Chip Wertenberger pair up for “2nd Crack at Caumont”. In an all-day playing Chip’s Germans defeated Dave’s Americans.

Mike Soffa’s Americans defeated Bill Yuen’s Germans in my favorite scenario: “Rockets Red Glare”. And because they finished early, they set up “Hell on Wheels” and played it twice, with each of them winning as the Germans.

Blair Bellamy’s Americans took out Sal Palaez’s Germans in “Hetzer Hunters”.

Dave Rosner took on Eric Visnowski and John Lehman in the Deluxe scenario “Lehr Sanction” (John left that game later in the day to join me in a different scenario.) Eric’s Germans defeated Dave’s British.

Tim Chan, a new player who had emailed me earlier in the week, and I paired up for a Starter Kit playing of “Butchers and Bakers.” It turned out to be a good lesson on why you should never give up. We played the scenario with some non-SK rules added in, specifically Bypass, Fire Lanes and Heat of Battle. On the last turn, Tim had two stacks of infantry, one on each side of the board. One stack had an 8-0 leader and two squads. The other had a 10-2 leader and one squad. The problem was he needed to exit 6 EVP, and each stack had only 5 EVP. No problem for my Germans then. On my last movement phase, I concentrated my troops to make it impossible for the 8-0 stack to exit on the following (last) turn. But as an insurance move I took a couple of AF pot shots on the 10-2 stack, and got a MC. Tim rolled snakes on the 10-2’s MC, which battle hardened to a 10-3. So at the start of his last movement phase he had 6 EVP one hex from the exit area, and they strolled off unopposed for the win!

Tim had to leave after our game wrapped up, so John Lehman split off from the game he was in with EV and Dave, and joined me in the older Journal scenario “Might Makes Right”. We had a very fun game, and in the end my Norwegians held on for a win.

We had our usual lunch at Larry’s Hot Dogs, served by the ever lovely and charming Veronica. And most of us made the trip to Bob’s Big Boy for a late dinner. It was another great day with a lot of scenarios getting played and a lot of laughs.
