We had a solid 10 members in attendance for our August Game Day at Emerald Knights:

In a battle of the Mikes, Mike Soffa’s Germans fell to Mike Cirincione’s Russians in the Pete Shelling scenario “Setting the Stage”.

Rob Stai’s Aussies defeated Eric Visnowski’s Japanese in “And Odd Angry Shot”.

Kevin Kiff’s Brits fell to Dan Plachta’s Germans in “Going Against the Grain”.

And Bill Yuen and Dave Nicholas took the Germans against me and new guy Shawn Hendrix as the French in “Failure to Communicate”. This is a classic blitzkrieg scenario with a powerful German force attacking across a stream with a combined arms attack. They're facing a small, well-led, mostly elite French force. My strategy was to play for time and try to push the Germans over the casualty cap. Things looked good for the first few turns when some hot rolls by Shawn KIA’d two German squads. But the soft spot for the French is their lack of serious AT capacity against Pz IIF’s and Pz 38’s. Our French managed to killed two panzers with MG attacks (one from an LMG and other from a MG MA.) The 25LL immobilized another and stunned still another, (both survived the battle however) before the crew broke under fire. The Germans pushed past the AT gun to run down the remaining French, only to have the AT Gun self rally under DM, then shoot to pivot the Gun toward the rear of the two remaining mobile panzers and keep rate. But then, on the threshold of its moment of glory (and victory)… rolled boxcars on the rate shot. Game over. It was a spectacular finish to a very enjoyable scenario.

This was Shawn’s very first game of ASL and it was a pleasure to have him join us for the day. We made our usual trip to Larry’s for a chili dog lunch.

Afterward, we made our usual pilgrimage to Bob’s Big Boy for dinner. When we came out there was a super-tricked out ’56 Bel Air convertible in the parking lot. We spent quite a bit of time ogling that, until the owner came over and gave us the grand tour. Turns out the restoration ran over $200,000 (including a $35,000 paint job.) It was a party atmosphere, with the car owner’s buddy sitting next to the Chevy with his ’31 Ford truck, playing some excellent blues on an a 12-string acoustic.

Socializing with good friends, playing some great ASL, enjoying great food, classic cars, and classic blues, all in one fun-filled day. I mean really, that’s a SoCalASL Game Day at its best.
