We had 9 members for the August edition of our ASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth:
Blair Bellamy's Canadians defeated Sal Pelaez' Germans in “Trial Run”.
Dan Plachta and James Quinn's Russians defeated Eric Visnowski's Germans in “Pulverized”.
Mike Soffa's Germans won a razor close victory over Dave Nicholas' Russians in “Fuhrer's Expectations”.
And David Rosner and I paired up for the Schwerepunkt scenario “Galician Persuasion”. Dave took the defending Russians against my attacking Hungarians. The Russians have a solid company of infantry, supported by three T34M43's, an 82mm MTR and a 45L AT Gun, to defend a town. The Hungarians have to grab 4 of 6 designated victory buildings. They get a company of elite 4-4-7's supported by two platoons of 5-3-7 assault engineers, 6 Zrinyi II assault guns and a 120 mm MTR. Dave had a good set-up, and put two of his tanks in HD positions on the level 1 hills, and kept his infantry safely behind the stream in front of the village.
The armor match-up in this scenario is tricky for the Hungarians. I love Zrinyi's; they're fast (14 MP), a small target, have decent armor (hard 6), a good gun (105: 14 TK AP), Smoke 7 and an SD 5. The problem is their MA can't reliably bust the front of a T34, and the T34 TK of 13 has a decent kill number against the Zrinyi's hull. I decided to keep my Zriniy's back from danger in the initial approach, and set up for a turn 3 assault into the village. I set up my 120 at level 2, in the only hex that can really see anything. I figured I'd use it to Smoke at least one of the tanks, then start pounding the other if I kept rate. Unfortunately, my dice were cold for the first 1.5 turns, and I promptly lost Smoke on the first shot, and missed and lost rate on the 2nd. Ok, so much for that… I spread out my infantry and headed for the tree line in front of the stream. My infantry made it there without casualties. On the bottom of turn 1, Dave launched a vicious counter- attack with his T34's into both flanks of my attack. Multiple Gun Duels ensued, and when the shooting was over, two of my Zrynyi's were burning with no loss to the Russians. This counter-attack caused me to divert all four remaining Zrynyi's and two assault engineer squads from my attack to deal with the threat in my rear. But in the meantime, my infantry pressed forward, making good progress. By the bottom of turn 3 the T34 threat was neutralized, and my infantry was closing in on the one remaining victory building. When I pinned Dave's last available reinforcing squad and leader, he'd had enough, and we called this a Hungarian victory. Dave's counter-attack was well planned and executed, and damn near won the scenario for him. Bravo!
This is a great scenario that shows even on the ROAR. It's challenging and exciting for both sides and Dave and I had great fun with it. I'd happily play this one again as either side.
We had our usual excellent lunch at San Carlo Deli. The survivors adjourned for our traditional dinner at The Habit. It was a great way to end an excellent day
