We had 10 members for our Special Game Day at Gameology on Saturday.

Fen Yan and Jim Svette paired up for the classic Deluxe scenario “Guryev’s HQ”. The scenario came down to the last CC DR, with Fen’s Germans squeezing out the win over Jim’s Russians.

Mike Meeks’ Americans defeated Scott Thompson’s Germans in “The Clearing”. And because that game was over fairly quickly, they set up the Schwerepunkt scenario “Across the Border”, with Scott’s Slovaks defeating Mike’s Poles.

Kevin Meeks and Blair Bellamy paired up for the SK scenario “Prelude to Festung Brest”. In the first game, Kevin’s Germans fell to Blair’s Americans. In the second playing Blair’s Germans defeated Kevin’s Americans.

Eric Visnowski and Dan Plachta chose the LSSSAH scenario “Ivan is Coming”. This scenario looked pretty cool, a real big, mid-war combined arms slugfest. In this game, Dan’s defending Germans were defeated by Vega’s Russians.

And Dave Kocot and I paired up for two scenarios. The first was the Tactiques scenario “Lebanese Drama”. The scenario caught our eye because it was Brits against French, actually, Scotts and Australians against Algerians) and set in Lebanon. The French have to attack a British held hill position and exit some armor and infantry while maintaining an advantage in CVP. I’d like to say I lost this as the French because I rolled badly during a lot of key points in the game (like missing 4 consecutive CC’s where I had a 2 to 1 or better odds.) But really, I made a lot of mistakes; there’s no excuse for losing 3 squads to rout failure, or not moving my FF2 when I should have. By 6:00 PM Dave’s Brits were so far up in CVP I knew the odds were slim, and since there was still time to get in a second game, we called this one a British win.

We then set up “Halha River Bridge”, with my Japanese attacking across desert terrain to capture a Russian held bridge. In this scenario everything went right for me, including getting a couple of key sniper attacks and opportune Berserk result. We called this one a Japanese win, with plenty of time to spare before the store closed.

We had our usual excellent lunch at The Hat, and wrapped out our games well before closing.

We had an interesting occurrence in the early evening. I was pretty engrossed in my game with Dave when I heard some commotion behind me. I didn’t pay any attention, it takes a lot to distract me from a game. But then I heard more commotion and heard tables and chairs being moved, and lots of voices. Finally I turned around to see a fellow lying on the floor. Hmm, I thought, that’s not something you usually see at a game day. My first concern was to confirm that it wasn’t one of our guys. It wasn’t, it was one of store regulars who usually plays card games, and he was having a seizure. And there was our own Scott Thompson kneeling next to him, calm, cool and completely in control of the situation. After a fair amount of time the paramedics arrived and they wheeled the guy out. He had already come out of the seizure by then and the girl he was with said he’d had them before. It looked like he’d be ok.

I have to say I was pretty proud that one our guys took charge and handled the situation. If anyone didn’t think Scott was The Man, well… they do now. Congrats, Scott for a job well done.
