Greetings ASL Fans;
We had 8 members in attendance for our August Game Day at Gameology:
Dave Nicholas and Blair Bellamy paired up for two scenarios. In the first, Blair’s Germans defeated Dave’s Poles in “Birth of the Blitzkrieg.†But Dave turned the tables on Blair in their second scenario, when his Italians defeated Blair’s Americans in “Converging Assaultâ€.
Eric Visnowski’s Germans defeated Ed Esparza’s Russians in “Panzergeistâ€.
Scott Thompson and Mike Soffa managed to get in two scenarios as well. In “No Mercy in Burcy†Mike’s Brits fell to Scott’s Germans. In “The Getawayâ€, Scott’s Russians were victorious over Mike’s Germans.
And Dan Plachta and I paired up for “Golden Pheasants†from Journal 9. This is the third scenario in the Nuremburg series by Pete Shelling. The dice gave Dan the Americans and I took the desperate German war criminals.
Dan’s Americans came on like gang-busters on turn 1, and rolled through my screening force of SS. His 9-2 led double .50 Cal kill stack chopped up any Germans who dared pop their heads up. By turn 3 the Americans were pulling up in front of the victory building, and I had managed to get only 1 SS squad into the victory building to help out its second-line and conscript defenders. But the rest of my surviving SS squads set up a secondary defensive position on the German left, where they could cover the wire in front of the victory building, while being safe from the American kill stack. In the end, I was able to slip my reinforcing conscripts into the victory building to plug up the stairwells. Though Dan was finally able to get into the building, it became clear that there wasn’t enough time for the Americans to fight their way up the stairs. We called it a German victory on the last game turn.
Like the previous scenarios in the series, this one left both players physically and mentally exhausted. As Dan observed, it is a complicated scenario and both sides have strengths and weaknesses. Whoever can best utilize the tools they’re given will probably win. We had a fun game and agreed we’d happily play it again as either side. I highly recommend this series. Next time I’d like to try it as a mini-CG.
We journeyed to The Hat for our usual lunch. That just never gets old. It was another great day of ASL.
