We had 7 members in attendance for the December edition of our ASL Game Day at the Guild House in Bellflower:

Jim Svette and Eric Visnowski's Russians defeated Blair Bellamy's Germans in the LFT Deluxe scenario “To Have and to Hold.”

Kyle Li's Americans pulled out a turn-around win against Scott Thompson's Germans in “City on the Edge”.

And Dave Nicholas took the Russians against my attacking Hungarians in the Rally Point scenario “Galatian Persuasion”. This scenario has a strong force of elite Hungarians (including assault engineers with a FT and DC) supported by six Zryni II assault guns against a company of Russians with three T34's. I like the armor match-up in this, and the board configuration is pretty interesting. My Hungarians got cut up pretty bad coming in, and Nick did a nice job keeping his tanks alive. But finally the weight of number prevailed when I just had more infantry than he had First Fire shots, and I was able to break into his defensive line. At that point we called it a game. Dave felt he set up too much on his right, which may have been correct, but he had his tanks and 82mm MTR in excellent spots. This easily could of gone the other way.

In one crazy sequence on turn 4: I had an 8-1 and 447 squad broken and DM. In the rally phase, I rolled snakes on the leader, who Battle Hardened. Then I rolled for the squad, and rolled snakes again. The squad rolled a Berserk result but without a target went Fanatic instead. In the movement phase of the same turn, the (now) 9-1 leader led the (now) Fanatic squad to jump into some woods adjacent to a T34, threatening the PF shot and possible CC. The T34 shot and wounded (then killed) the 9-1. The squad rolled snakes, and went berserk again, and charged into the T34's hex. This allowed 2 Zryni's to drive past the T34 and set up for AF rear shots. In the AF phase, the berserk squad found a PF and killed the T34. As Blair pointed out, after going berserk twice in the same turn, that squad clearly had some anger management issues…

We had a Dave Nicholas retrospective when we had lunch at a diner he used to eat at as a kid (food was ok, and reasonably priced.) All of our games cleared pretty early, and we went to Chris and Pitt's for dinner, where most of us got hamburgers. All in all it was an excellent and enjoyable day. I must say, this was our third Game Day at the store, and it is proving to be a real winner for us. The owners are really nice, we had plenty of room to play, and the store is very clean and well-lit. Couldn't really ask for more.
