We had an outstanding 10 member turn-out for the December edition of our SoCalASL Game Day at Gameology:
It was great to see Bruce Kirkaldy back for the first time in several years. He paired up with Scott Thompson for “Streets of Stalingrad”, with Scott's Russians defeating Bruce's Germans.
In the 'battle of the Jims', Jim Svette's Germans defeated Jimmy Hansen's Russians in “Guards Counterattack”.
Dan Plachta's Japanese fell to David 'Special K' Kocot's Americans in “Bats Out of Hell”.
Eric Visnowski's Russians defeated Sal Palaez' Germans in “Slamming the Door”.
And Dave 'D.L.' Lewis and I paired up for the new Schwerepunkt scenario “Urdom Done”. D.L.'s playing skills have really progressed quickly in the few short months he's been playing with us. I think part of that can be attributed to his willingness to take on just about anything. In our case, we chose a scenario that had: deep snow, drifts, winter camo, ski troops, and falling snow, MOL's, and a MOL projector, in addition to a pillbox and trenches, which he had not played with before.
D.L. took the defending Germans against my attacking Russians. The Germans get a couple of good quality platoons, a Stug B, Pz IVF2 and Marder, to hold a village, with some 548 ski troops as reinforcements. The Russians get a reinforced company supported by 6 KV's and a T34. The Germans win if they have a good order MMC in a stone building or the PB at game end. I attacked aggressively, knowing that Schwerepunkt scenarios tend to keep the attacker tight for time. The first couple of turns went badly for D.L., but he hung in there and kept at it. The fight eventually came down to a final turn CC against the PB, and I was able to roll low enough for the win. D.L. did a great job and handled all the new rules well. We both had a great time, and both agreed we'd play this one again.
We had our usual excellent lunch at The Hat. The survivors retired to Dickey's Barbecue for a late dinner. All I can say about that is I'm glad I got it out of my system. I thought the food was expensive, and my pulled pork sandwich had a lot of fat. But hey, its the company that counts, and we enjoyed our dinner. It was great day for sure!
