Several months ago we made the decision to leave St. Crispin's as our 2nd Saturday venue in favor of the Guild House in Bellflower. I must say, it was clearly a wise move. Attendance has climbed steadily at our new location. Yesterday we had 10 members, including a cameo from Blair Bellamy who provided kibbutzing and neutral commentary for a couple of games, but didn't actually push any counters around.
Ed Esparza's Germans defeated John Lehman's Brits in the AP scenario “Lion in the Field”.
Dan Plachta and Jim Cotugno's Germans fought to a draw with Dave Kocot's Russians in the Melee Pack scenario “Vulcan's Forge”.
And we had a double playing of “Kamikaze Gorge”, with Scott Thompson's Japanese facing off against Dave Nicholas' Americans, and my Japanese facing off against Eric Visnowski's Americans. Scott and Nick eventually called their game a draw due to time constraints. My Japanese gutted out a down to the last CC win over Eric's Americans. I say gutted out.. not to take away from Eric's always-excellent play, but man did he have some hot dice. At one point his Priest (with a 105 Gun and a rate of 1) went on a five shot rate tear (not including IF). Then, in a later Prep Fire, he rolled snake eyes twice in a row with his MMG kill stack, followed by snakes and a critical hit with that notorious Priest, and following that crit resolution, shot snakes *again* with the rate shot from the Priest. Four shots, four Japanese squads KIA'd in a row. Eric and I had a great time, as we always do. We agreed that, though it was probably more fun to play the Americans, it was worth playing again.
We decided to walk to Sizzler for lunch, which everyone seemed pleased with. For dinner, the survivors trekked to Chris & Pitt's. Not Eric's favorite place, but he was a good sport about it. The Guild House has really turned into a great venue for us. It's centrally located, easy to find, and has lots of lunch and dinner options nearby. The store is clean and well lit, and the owners are always friendly and gracious. Turn-out has climbed to a pretty impressive number. It's always a great day when we play there.
