We had four members, plus a cameo from Matt Cicero and later, Blair Bellamy, who escaped from the “corporate weasels” late in the day to join us. He stayed to kibbutz and join us for dinner.

Eric Visnowski and Sal Palaez paired up for the classic scenario “The Fugitives”, with Eric's Russians defeating Sal's Germans.

And Dave Nicholas and I paired up for the Schwerepunkt scenario “Beaufort's Feast”. I had played this one before, but it was on my play list to do again. It's perfectly balanced on the ROAR and fun to play. I took the attacking French and Dave had the defending Germans. I like this scenario because it has both an infantry battle and armor battle and I love early war tank combat. The French get 6 S-35's, pretty much the best tanks the French produced and considered in 1940 to be among the best tanks in the world. The Germans get a Pz IIF, a IVD and three Pz IIIF's. The French are attacking with 18 squads against the Germans 11 squads. I have to say, I played the infantry battle like a newbie; I lost a full squad and a leader KIA to a -2 shot, and bumbled forward with various squads and leaders breaking left and right. My infantry casualties were high, by the end of the scenario I was down to about 8 or 9 squads and only 2 of my original 4 leaders. But while I was loosing the infantry battle, I was winning the armor battle decisively, and by turn 3 I had killed all 5 German tanks without loosing a single S-35. In the end, Dave ran out of tanks before I ran out of infantry, and my tanks, once unconcerned with the German armor, were able to bypass freeze the German strongpoints while my infantry moved up and destroy them. It was obvious by turn 6 that the Germans had no chance left, and we called it a French win.

We made our usual trek to Larry's for chili dogs. Unfortunately Veronica wasn't working. And the survivors made their way to Bob's Big Boy for our traditional late dinner. All in all it was a great, if somewhat lightly attended, day.

Next Saturday we will be at West Coast Melee, so we will not be meeting in Chatsworth. Our Game Day schedule will resume on March 5th at Gameology.
