We had seven members, plus cameos by Ric Hammond and Tracy Woods, for our February ASL Game Day in Bellflower:
Hank W.'s Russians defeated Dan Plachta's Germans in “Wiener Waltz”.
Fen Yan's Americans defeated Peter Strand's SS in “Checking Out”
And Guy Jimenez took the Canadians against me and Gerard Unterreiner as the Germans in “The Closer”. The Germans get two companies of infantry, backed by a Panther, a Tiger, two Pz IV's and a PSW. They have to cross a stream, fight through a town, and exit off the north board edge. The Canadians get a couple of platoons of infantry, 4 Sherman V's and a Firefly to try to stop them.
The Germans get a lot of choices as to where to attack. The far left flank offers a long run down the board edge without crossing the stream. The right flank offers the only bridge. The center involves crossing some open ground, but then a covered approach to backfield. Guy had a very good setup. He had the left well covered, so we decided to go for the bridge. The problem with this attack was we were concerned the Firefly was in the woods along the right board edge. On turns 1 and 2 we pushed our troops over the river on the far right, then across the bridge. By the end of turn 2 we'd cleared a bridgehead over the river, and sent the armor over on turn 3. We darted the PSW off the board on turn 3 for a quick 5 EVP. Meanwhile the platoon we'd sent to the far right to knock out the Firefly discovered that it was actually dummies. (Well played Guy!). It was now obvious the Firefly was in the center, so we sent the Pz IV's to the right, and put the Tiger and Panther to the left of them to cover. It became a race to the board edge, and we eventually were able to exit all the AFV's except the Panther (which bogged on a hedgerow), resulting in a German victory. Guy played a great game, and we had a lot of fun. In retrospect, I have some concerns about the Canadians having only one tool (the Firefly) in their kit for taking on the the Panther and Tiger. If that MA had broken, this one would have been over quickly.
We had our usual lunch as 600 Degrees Pizza, and the survivors adjourned to Hambones for our usual excellent barbecue dinner. It was another great day in Bellflower.
