A nice broad topic. I'll start by saying that I'd rather break myself with FPF than let those enemy hooligans get past me, surround me then break and capture me ANYWAY. If you have few forces to play with…let each one blaze away until their weapons melt or the bad guys stop wandering through adjacent hexes. Of course, you will soon be surrounded by lots of residual…and that may do the job for you!
August 5, 2008 at 1:20 am #5265testuserMemberI did my very first FPF this last Game Day. Smacked some of Micheal Cirricione's boys with a 4-2 shot, rolling a 3! Take that, Fascists! It was a bit scary doing that with 2nd line Americans. But with hot dice it worked out well.
The thing was, I wouldn't have minded breaking quite so much as I had some Good Order guys adjacent and a clear rout path. It overlaps with the layered defense topic. FPF isn't so bad if you have a place to run to!
In ASLSK it's the only way to Voluntary Rout, btw.

My guys never pass enough MCs to get a chance at FPF in most games anyway. : /

I am more apt to employ FPF with a USMC squad than an Italian 2nd liner etc, UNLESS I have a TON of Russian conscripts to burn.I do like the 'wall of green” quite a bit however[residual fp] and if a squad can fill a weak point in that wall I might go for it.Eric V

Other time I tried it, I wouldn't have minded breaking – the unit was
going to die in AFPh, and I had a rout path back to my Commisar.
So I rolled snakes and battle hardened to a 6-2-8 on the FPF shot.
Rob gave up soon after that. It was glorious!Geoff

I only broke (and ELR's) the Germans, but when Jim returned the following week that part of the attack had been slowed. (Brandon was playing Jim's troops as he was busy that day.)
