We had 8 members for the January edition of our SoCalASL Game Day at the Guild House in Bellflower:
Guy Jimenez' Americans fell to Ric Hammond's Germans in “Gavin Take”.
Dan Plachta's Republicans defeated Dave Lewis' Nationalists in “Far From Home”.
Dave Nicholas' Germans defeated Stance Nixon's Belgians in “Belgian Blitzkrieg”.
Because their game got over pretty quickly they turned it around and tried it again, with Nick prevailing as the Belgians against Stance's Germans.
And Fen Yan took the defending Poles against my Germans in the huge early war Bounding Fire scenario “Steel Garden”. This scenario has 16 German squads, supported by six PzIIA's, Four PzIB's and a PzIVC attacking across three boards to capture three multi-hex buildings plus kill at least half of the Polish armor. The Poles get 12 mixed quality squads, supported by eight FT-17 (half armed with 37* Guns, the remainder with CMG MA's) and a 75LAA Gun (with no AP). The Poles are required to set up their armor on the middle board, and their infantry on the middle or rear board (where the VC buildings are.) Although the PzII's are barely a match for the 37* armed FT's, the FT's are radioless and have 5 MP's. Forcing them into a rolling battle would put them at a severe disadvantage. Therefore I decided to line up all my infantry on the German left, hit the front line Poles with a hammer blow and then wheel all the way around the Polish right, outflanking Fen's forward center positions. All the German armor, except for two PzII's and two PzI's, went into this effort. The remaining four tanks went in on the far German right, with the intent of racing into the Polish backfield and disrupting the Polish infantry as they tried to pull back to the VC buildings.
My initial attack went well, except that I quickly realized my big left hook had a long way to go to get to the VC buildings, and time would not be on my side. I also realized that the FT tanks were hard to kill, and I needed to kill at least 4. My right-hand flank attack blitzed into the Polish backfield, only to have to turn around and finish off the FT's that came after them. Fen did a good job, reacting quickly and getting most of his infantry back to the VC buildings in good order. During the middle game, most of the German tanks were completely engaged slugging it out with the FT's. By turn 6 my infantry was hitting the first VC buildings with just enough armor support to get the job done, and more of the remaining German armor streaking in to support. Fen fought gamely, and got in several good licks with his AA Gun. He also won some critical CC's during the battle for the buildings. In the end though, the Germans had just enough firepower to get the job done, with the last Polish defenders dying in the final CC phase of the game. It was as close and tight a scenario as you can get. We had a great game and we had great fun! Bravo to Fen for a well played, hard-fought game! We both like this scenario a lot, and would be happy to try it again.
Most of us went to the nearby pizza place for lunch, and the survivors adjourned to Hambone's for our traditional late dinner. It was a great way to spend a rainy Saturday!
