We had seven members in attendance for the January edition of our ASL Game Day at the Guild House in Bellflower:

Dave Nicholas' Americans fell to Eric Visnowski and Scott Thompson's Japanese in the classic Deluxe scenario “Mayhem in Manila”.

Stance Nixon and Dave Lewis paired up for “Lend Lease Attack” and went at it, hammer and tongs, throughout the day. With only minutes remaining before the store closed, Stance's Russians squeezed out a last movement phase victory over D.L.'s Germans.

And I paired up with Dan Plachta for the VotG scenario “Escape from Komosol Park”. This scenario has a group of NKVD troops led by 3 commissars trying to punch their way through a thin line of Germans. The Germans are hampered by an SSR that requires them to take a TC at the beginning of each German Prep Fire and Russian movement phase. Failure results in those units being marked with either a Prep Fire or DFF counter as appropriate. The ROAR has this scenario 22/15 pro-Russian, but it sure didn't feel like it. I made good progress as the Russians on the 1st three turns, only to be stopped cold on the bottom on turn 3. We called it a German victory and changed sides. By turn 3 of this second playing we again had the same result, with my Germans easily defeating Dan's Russians. By then, Dave Nicolas' game had cleared, and he volunteered to play the Germans against Dan. This time Dan tried a Human Wave, but that proved to be a disaster and it was over by the bottom of turn 1. Clearly there was something with this scenario that we were all missing. But it was fun and interesting, and I love VotG, so it certainly wasn't a waste of time.

We split up for lunch, with Scott, EV and Nick going to Burger King and the remainder to Sizzler. The survivors adjourned to Chris and Pitts for our traditional late barbecue dinner.

The Guild House was very busy, with a large role playing game going on and some kind of card tournament. But the owners saved two large tables for us, and we were very appreciative of that. It was a great day of ASL, as usual.
