We had a solid 10 members, plus a cameo by Blair Bellamy, for the January edition of our ASL Game Day at Paper Hero's in Sherman Oaks:
Peter Strand's Germans defeated Sal Pelaez' Russians in “Borodino Train Station”.
Chris Watson-Wood's Germans defeated Larry Reinking's Americans in “Behind on the Count”
James Quinn's Russians defeated Dan Plachta's Italians in “Per L'onore Di Roma”.
JJ Ma's Russians and Mike Soffa's Germans fought to a draw in the Dispatches scenario “A Willingness to Die”.
Eric Visnowski and I chose an obscure Deluxe scenario, “Job Tvoi MatJ”. It looked pretty interesting. The Russians get a mixed company of 6-2-8's and either 5-2-7's or 4-4-7's (Russian choice), supported by two SU-122's and an OT-34. They have to capture a key building held by a late war gaggle of German infantry, backed by a StuGIIIG. With two boards and 4.5 turns, it looked like a great tournament scenario. The ROAR has nothing on this, so we wanted to give it a test-drive. Unfortunately, by turn 2 it was obvious that my Russians didn't have enough swinging dicks to get the job done, and we dropped it in favor of another scenario. This one has potential, but it needs work.
So we then set up the Schwerepunkt scenario “Zwart's Madhouse”, a Blitzkrieg scenario set in Holland, 1940. It has a first line company of dutch troops, with a couple of pillboxes, defending a handful of houses. The Germans get a well armed early war SS company. That's it. Simple and straight forward. This scenario is all about infantry basics; fire and maneuver, residual, fire lanes, first fire principles, close combat… all the things that make ASL the best W.W.II wargame in print. It turned out to be fast, fun and exciting. Every die roll counted. Every Sniper activation emitted corresponding cheers/groans. In the end, Eric just barely managed to squeeze out a victory. We had a blast with this one.
We had our usual lunch next door at Nat's. The survivors, joined by Blair, adjourned to Bob's for our traditional late dinner. It was a great day of ASL!
