Our first Game Day of 2019 was a huge success, with 10 members present, plus a cameo by Tim White:
Scott Thompson brought his new copy of Bounding Fire's “Corregidor” module. He and Geoff Coward paired up for “Return to the Rock”, with Scott's Americans defeating Geoff's Japanese. I gotta say, that historical map is sweet.
In a battle of the Deluxe gurus, Eric Visnowski's Brits defeated Fen Yan's Germans in “Lehr Sanction”.
Dave Nicholas' Germans defeated Dan Plachta's Russians in “Objective Uman”.
Mike Meeks and Bruce Kirkaldy paired up to work on their upcoming playing of one of the K.G. Piper CG's.
And Jim Svette and I paired up for the Bounding Fire scenario “Obian Highway”. The dice gave me the defending Russians against Jim's attacking Germans. The Russians have to hold one of three multi-hex victory buildings, with a couple of platoons of infantry, a dug-in T-70, and a 45L AT Gun. They get reinforcements in the form of a platoon of 5-2-7's supported by two T-34M43's and two Valentine IX's. The Germans have a reinforced company of 4-6-7's supported by two PzIVH's, two PzIIIL's and a PzIVF1.
I set up around mid-board, with the T-70 on the left board edge and my 45L on the far right. The Germans don't get a lot of time, so Jim pressed forward and engaged my main line quickly. He pushed his PzIVH's to my right, intending to punch through my flank and engage my on-coming reinforcements. This was an excellent plan. I opened up with my 45L, though it wasn't of a match for the PzIV's. Unfortunately for Jim, my dice were red hot all game, and his were cold. When the shooting stopped, one PzIV was immobilized and the second killed by a critical hit. A T-34 finished off the other PzIV, and all four Russian tanks went in to kill the PzIII's. The Germans at this point had no viable anti-tank capability, and were far from taking the victory buildings. We called this one a Russian win on turn 4.
Bruce and Jim S. had to clear out, which left me and Mike Meeks available. We paired up for a replaying of Obian Highway, with me taking the Germans. This second playing went quite differently and was incredibly close. By turn 6 one of my PzIVH's was immobilized and out of the fight. The second was immobilized and had a broken MA. The Russians still had one T-34 and the dug-in T-70, but had basically run out of infantry. We called this one a German win. I've said it before and I'll say it again, for a guy who really doesn't have that many games under his belt, Mike plays like a Grog. He'll take on any scenario any time, and he learns quickly. Bravo Mike, for an excellent game well played!
We really like this scenario a lot. It's fun, exciting and interesting. Both sides get just enough to get the job done. ROAR has the balance almost dead-even. I'd happily play this again as either side.
We had our usual lunch at Farmer Boys, and because most of our games didn't clear until 9:30, the survivors adjourned to Denny's for a late dinner. It was a great way to start the ASL year.
