We had 5 members in attendance for our first Game Day of 2018, and 3/5th's of them were named Jim:

Scott Thompson's Germans defeated Dave “Special K” Kocot's Poles in the Poland in Flames scenario “Boiling Kettle of Fire & Blood”.

And that left 'the battle of Jims'. Jim Svette took the Germans against me and Jimmy Hansen as the Americans in my favorite scenario “Rocket's Red Glare”. I always recommend giving the Germans the balance (add a squad) and we did that this time as well.

Jim had a good set-up, but it looked like he left a blind spot on his right, which would allow the Americans to race into the German backfield. But we should have known Jim would be more clever than that. He had his 105 ART positioned to cover that flank, and hit a 3-squad stack of paratroopers led by the 10-2, moving in the open (luckily not a crit). The net result was Gavin (the 10-2) battle hardened to a 10-3 (and went Heroic)! We were able to get that platoon, and a second one, around the German right, and came in through the woods at the rear of the village, to engage the FlakPz. The TD went up to 1st level to engage the FlakPz, but got Stunned. In the meantime, I took the 9-2 with 6 squads and entered on the American right. Things were going pretty well for the paratroopers; although we were steadily taking losses we were able to compress the Germans into the village. Then Gavin took a wound and the squads with him broke and routed. Jim was able to pull his HMG and MMG together with the 9-2 and went on a rate tear against the para's in the woods. But turn six we were down to 3.5 good order squads, but they went in for the final drive. Jim's surviving squad was able to pin the only para squad next to the victory building, and that made it a German win. This was my 12th playing of the scenario, and I'd play it again in a heartbeat.

We chose lunch at Jack in the Box because it was quick and convenient. In the end, it cost me the same for a double cheeseburger and onion rings as it would have if we went to The Hat. Except at Jack's the onion rings are a 10th of the size and mostly not edible. But hey, your feet can stick to the floor for no extra charge. The survivors went to Jersey Mike's for dinner. It was a great day and a lot of fun, as always
