We had six members, plus a cameo from Bruce Kirkaldy, for our first Game Day of 2017.
Jon Jaramillo's Germans fell to Dave Nicholas' Brits in “Portomaggiore”.
Scott Thompson's Germans gutted out a down-to-the-wire victory over John Lehman's Russians in “Fiery Finale”.
And Eric Visnowski took the Germans against my Americans in the late war Schwerepunkt scenario “Zebra Mission”. This scenario pits a well-led American force supported by a Pershing, two Shermans and an MMG 'Meat Chopper' against a mixed bag of late-war Germans with low ELR, supported by a Nashorn and a Wirblewind. As with all Schwerepunkt scenario, the attacking Americans are pressed for time.
Our first playing can be summed up in one sentence: I rolled badly and tried to make up for it with bad tactics. It was ugly, there was a lot of whining, and by turn 3 it was obvious I'd sufficiently mucked up the attack to make it unwinnable for my Americans. So we called it a German win and re-booted the game. I really needed to redeem myself, so we kept the same sides and tried again. On the very first shot of this second game, Eric killed my MMG Meat Chopper with an LMG, but both the crew and the squad of passengers survived, and I sensed the day was going to turn around. My second attack went much better, and my Americans eventually cleaned out the town and took the win. Eric and I had a lot of fun, as we always do, despite my bitching and poor play.
We enjoyed our usual excellent lunch at The Hat, and the survivors got dinner at Jersey Mikes. It was a great start for 2017.
