We had 9 members for the July edition of our Game Day at the Guild House in Bellflower.
When we arrived the store was holding a special D & D event and was loaded with role players. But that wasn't a problem because the new store is just so damn huge. The owners set up a couple of extra tables for us, and that worked out just fine.
And the results:
Blair Bellamy's Brits defeated Dan Plachta's Germans in “Backs to the Wall”.
Larry Reinking's Slovak's fell to Dave Lewis' Germans in “Rebels Without a Pause”.
Stance Nixon's Germans defeated Peter Strand's Americans in the classic scenario “Devil's Hill”.
And I took the defending Russians against Dave Nicholas' and Eric Visnowski's Germans in the 1943 Eastern Front scenario “Death Head's Debut” from Schwerepunkt 23. The Germans get a reinforced company of SS supported by 6 PzIII's, two PzIVF2's and a couple of 251-1's. They have to clear a level 3 hill, and a village, of a 1st line company of Russians and a couple of platoons of conscripts. The Russians also get a couple of 45L's, and 82mm MTR, and four reinforcing T34 M41's. From the Soviet perspective, they have to choose to defend the town or the hill in strength. Because the Russians also get 6 trenches, and Ground Snow was in effect, I decided to defend the hill, and built a solid festung at level 3, with some nice retreat routes. But the scenario has 6 turns, giving the Germans plenty of time. So I put the conscripts and a 7-0 in the town, to delay the German flanking force and make them fight for it. Everything else went on level 3.
Eric came in from the north, straight up the hill, with the PzIV's and four PzIII's in support, and a 9-2 led kill stack on the flank. Nick took the flanking force, reinforced by a couple of extra squads and two Pz III's, with the goal of quickly clearing the town and attacking my hill position from the rear. Unfortunately for Nick, thanks purely to my dice, what should have been a pretty quick and easy assault on the village turned into a complete shit show, with half his squads broken on turn 2. I brought in my T34's on turn 2, sending two tanks to cut off and kill 3 of Nick's squads, and sent the other two up the middle to cover the southern approach to the hill. Meanwhile, Eric and I slugged it out on hill, with his 9-2 kill stack chewing into my flank. In the town, Nick recovered from his setback, and cleared out my conscripts on turn 4, while Eric continued to make slow but steady progress on the hill. But in the process I was slowly whittling down the German tanks, made worse by two recall losses from broken MA's. In the end, it became obvious with time running out that the Germans didn't have enough time or strength remaining to clear the hill, and we called this a Russian win.
We all enjoyed this scenario a great deal. ROAR has this at almost even, and we agreed. We all said we'd happily try it again as either side.
For lunch, the store owners planned to have a catered BBQ meal from Johnny Reb's for only $5. We all took advantage of that, and felt we got our money's worth. The survivors adjourned to Hambone's, our new favorite barbecue place, for dinner, and they didn't disappoint. What? Barbecue for lunch AND dinner? Yes, and it was awesome. Deal with it bitches.
It was a great day of great fun!
