We had seven members for the July edition of our SoCalASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming in Chatsworth.
Jaime Pelaez' Germans defeated Peter Strand's Russians in “Long Range Recon”.
Dan Plachta's Germans defeated Eric Visnowski's and Dave Rosner's Americans in “Cobra Kings”.
And Sal Pelaez and I paired up for the Red October scenario “Stone Age Caves”. This is the scenario I played as the Germans last week against Dave Rosner. That scenario blew out prematurely after Dave got 4 consecutive critical hits with his 82 MTR. Sal chose the Germans, and put together a fairly balanced, up front defense. I noted that the Germans had the western end fairly lightly defended. So I decided on a three prong attack. I put the 82 MTR and both HMG's with the 9-2 up on the Slag heap. They provided over-watch for a couple of platoons of 4-4-7's attacking from the southeast. I assembled an assault team of four 5-2-7's and two crews with DC's, to come in from the far west, targeting Hall 1 and the Administration building. My main attack came in from the south against Hall 2, with all my remaining forces (all the 6-2-8's, LMG's and remaining 5-2-7's).
My MTR ran out of Smoke on the first shot, so my 4-4-7 attack had to creep forward slowly under fire. I thought I would be clever with my western flank attack, by using the DC's as Bangalore Torpedoes to clear the wire. But I quickly realized that crews suck at setting DC's (US#2). So on turn 2, they just started working their way through the wire the hard way. My main attack moved forward steadily, forcing the Germans to shoot as much a possible, and forming huge fire groups to break the German defenders. This scenario is basically a war of inches. The Russians have to apply steady pressure and keep going. Sal fought doggedly, but I was slowly able to pry the front line locations out of his grasp. Finally, on turn 5 the Germans in Hall 2 collapsed, and fell back into Hall 1. But now my plan of using of a flank attack paid off, and I was able to put the Germans in a vice that prevented them from routing back enough to regroup. It was over on turn 6 and we called it a Russian win. But this was a hard-fought battle that could have gone either way. The Russians have plenty of time. I think they have to be very patient and use all of the time they.re given to wear down the Germans, allowing the Sniper and ammo shortage to help with the process.
Sal played a great game all the way through, and we had fun time with this scenario. We both thought it was pretty balanced (ROAR agrees), and would happily play it again as either side.
We enjoyed our usual excellent lunch at San Carlo Deli, but sat inside due to the heat. The survivors enjoyed our usual late dinner at The Habit. It was an awesome, if hot, day of ASL!
