We had 3 Chatsworth regulars (Dave Nicholas, Phil Seymour and Dan Plachta) at the St. Louis tournament this weekend, so we expected to be a little light on the ground. But we still ended up with 9 members for the July edition of our ASL Game Day at All Ways Gaming:
Eric Visnowski's Germans defeated Sal Palaez' Russians in “Cutting Off the Hydra's Head”.
Mike Soffa's Hungarians defeated Dave Lewis' Russians in “Galician Persuasion”
Ed Esparza's Germans defeated Larry Reinking's Brits in “Bewildered and Belligerent”
JJ Ma's Germans and Blair Bellamy's Russians fought to a tie in “Clash at Borisovka”. I didn't know you could have a tie in ASL… A draw, yes, if you run out of time. But a tie?
And Dave Reinking took the Germans against me and Jaime Palaez as the attacking Russians in “Grab and Go”. I like this Pete Shelling design a lot. I've played it at least once before, and may have playtested it. I think both sides have challenges, but the German player can lose this with one wrong move or a flawed set-up. Dave, being the great player he is, was up for the challenge, and presented us with an excellent, up front, defense. This was my first time teaming up with Jaime, but I've previously watched him play. Though he's a relatively new player, he brings a lot of game to the table. He's naturally aggressive, and plays with confidence and skill. I've seen him employ some clever, outside of the box tactics, and knew he'd be a formidable partner. This is a fighting withdrawal scenario. The Soviets get two companies of the best troops the Red Army has to offer: Guards Airborne 4-5-8's, with ELR 5 and five good leaders. The Germans are not slouches either. They get a company of 4-6-8's, backed by a SPW 251-2 and a SPW 251-SMG that are worth bonus EVP if they can get off the board. The Soviets get bonus points for capturing multi-hex buildings by turn 4. Jaime and I agreed that the best strategy for the Russians in this scenario is a fast, aggressive attack, relying on their excellent morale and leadership. Jaime took 2/3 of the squads and attacked from the left. I took a couple of platoons, the 9-2 and 8-0, and all the MG's for a flank attack from the right. Jaime hit hard, and took casualties (as we expected) but knocked the Germans out of their position. By turn 4 we'd captured two buildings, but Dave was playing his usual great game and got his men back into secondary positions with a minimum of losses. We kept the pressure up, and continued to drive the Germans back, with both sides now taking some serious losses. Unfortunately we ran out of time with 2 turns to go, and decided to call it a draw. We all had great fun and really enjoyed the scenario. I always consider it a great day when I can play Dave Reinking, who is a great player and a true gentleman. It was also a pleasure to team up with Jaime. He took responsibility for the bulk of the fighting, and was clearly up to the challenge. Bravo!
As an interesting aside, Eric Visnowski pointed out that this SoCalASL event was the first time ever to have two sets of brothers in attendance. Congrats to Larry and David Reinking, and Sal and Jaime Palaez, for making SoCalASL history!
We had our usual excellent lunch on the patio at San Carlo Deli. The survivors adjourned to The Habit for our traditional late dinner. We were joined by Dave Rosner and his wife Barbra. It was a great way to wrap up an awesome day.
