We had a solid six members in attendance for our July ASL Game Day at Gameology:

Blair Bellamy’s Poles defeated Ed Esparza’s Germans in the Critical Hit scenario “Dawn of a New Age”.

Eric Visnowski’s Italians fell to Dave Nicholas’ French in the LFT scenario “Rout on the Riviera”.

And Phil Seymour and I paired up for our first game ever. We chose “Circle of Doom” from Journal 9; the first in the three scenario “Nuremburg” series designed by my ol’ buddy Pete Shelling. I really like Pete’s scenarios; he designs them to force the attacker and defender to make hard choices and trade-offs. And these scenarios include the added attraction of having variable OB’s. All three have been on my play list since the Journal came out.

This scenario features a reinforced American recon force attacking into boards 22 and 24, defended by a gaggle of mediocre German squads, 2 Pz IV’s and a JdPz IV protecting two 88 flak guns and a duel 37L. For my variable choice I took the HMG group over the PSK, and for the bonus choice I took the two extra squads and PSK over the Panther. It was a tough call; but I knew Phil was going to take the air support, and the Panther was going to be a prime target. I think it was the right choice.

Our game was close every step of the way. Handling recon troops is a tricky business, and Phil handled them with skill. Both of us took very few casualties for the first 3 turns as my Germans fell back to their MLR along the south board edge. The fighting heated up on turn 4, and as I expected the American air power systematically killed off my armor, allowing his troops to press forward. The game came down to a last-turn Close Combat in the last AA Gun hex, where the American squads killed off my crew and secured a victory. It was one of those games that had us both drained and exhilarated. Great scenario, great game, great opponent. Who could ask for more? I’d happily play this one again anytime, as either side.

In the middle of the day we made our usual trek to The Hat for lunch. It’s usually busy, even in the mid-afternoon, but it happened to be dead for once. Probably due to the holiday weekend. We had a great meal as always and very fun day. I think we headed home around 9:45.
